Okay, I know its not fishing related but what the Hell, I know most of you must own scanners. If not, how would all these great fishing pics get posted (aside from digicams). smile

Anyone have any good recomendations for a scanner around $150 or so? I don't care about the bells and whistles and all that other little [Bleeeeep!]. I just want a scanner that produces good digital images.

THANKS!!!

Sparky,

Stick with the Epsons. Either the 1250 or the 1650, depending on how much you want to spend and where you buy it. Check the prices on buy.com; Be aware that even if you buy one at say, Circuit City, after two weeks if something goes wrong with it, you have to send it to Epson anyway, so you might as well buy it online.

In that price range, I'd go with the Canon CanoScan N676U. It does great quality, is fast and is very small, less than an inch thick. It also gets its power from the USB bus so you don't need a seperate power cable for it. Check it out at

Stay away from the UMAX Astra line! Bought one last year and it's a piece of junk. My buddy that works for HP told me I should have gone with the Canon or an Epson. Good luck.

Hi RPetzold,
I got my wife a Microtek scanjet3600. I read good opinions on epinions. I haven't tried it out yet. Have to wait till Chistmas. It was only $29.00 at CompUsa. That was a 2 day sale. Now there $49.00. Check them out. I also seen a umax 2000 at sears for $39.00 but it was a parallel conection instead of the USB connection like I got. THe Usb I heard are a lot faster than parrellel.

Sparkey,

I'd save your pennies and just go for the digital camera.

Then again, I don't own a bazillion dollar SLR camera, or have bazillion prints to scan in, so it's easy for me to say that. wink

Go to www.epson.com and under product information click on the link for clearance center. Here you can pick up a refurbished 636U for only $45 or a 640U for only $59, both of which only cost $10 for UPS standard shipping. Even as refurbished units they come with a 1 year warranty, which is as long as I've seen. Personally I own the older 636U scanner and it is fast and has excellent image quality.

Epson scanners have regularly been rated the best of class for the last few years by numerous computing magazines, and the quality shows. I would highly recommend Epson scanners. For $70 you will NOT get a better scanner than either of these two. Period.

Certain one hour photo shops for a minimal fee will give you a copy of all your prints in jpeg format at the same time you have your film processed.
