Rockfish, have you tried saltwater steelheading off the north tip of Whidbey? Or is it Fort Casey? One of those areas is great for saltwater steelheading. I have not done it myself but I keep on reading about it in the SEA Times. rolleyes

From what I understand it is a shore fishery. I am sure you can fish from a boat but I never hear anything about boat fishing. confused

Merry XMAS to all.

I've fished for steelhead in the saltwater at Ft Casey state park and at Bush Pt. Occasionally they're caught on hardware but the lure of choice is a double skirted hoochie, kind of like what you would use to troll for salmon but without the head. in front of the hoochie is a fairly large spin-n-glow. It's casted out and retrieved slowly near the bottom. It is the most unlikely, ugliest lure you've ever seen but it does catch steelhead. Many times they are caught within 8-10 feet of the water's edge.. I've spoke to people hwo have tried to catch em from a boat and the consensus is that you have a much better chance from shore. It's probably about the peak of the season right now. Unfortunately it seems like the wild fish are easier to catch than hatchery fish. If anyone wants to give this fishery a try be sure to stop in at Ace Hardware in Oak Harbor and talk to Kevin, he's a great guy who can show you how to rig up for this type of fishin.

Sincerely,
Roger
