I have been looking into buying a pair of neoprene chest waders. I already have a cheap pair of breathables, but need something to suit my hunting needs as well. What do you suggest in the 3mm size that comes with booties? I know Cabelas has a pair for $50 or so, can I do better? Should I be looking into 5mm? I think those would be to warm...

My waders serve dual purposes, like yours. I usually get a new pair every three years (the last pair lasted 4 years), and I go the cheap route and get the $50 ones at WalMart. This last pair is a set of Hodgemans I got last year. Walmart has Remington waders for about $49.00. I think these are 3mm. I go with the ones without boots, as the leaks always seem to spring where the boot and wader come together. You also have options for traction depending upon where you have to hike.

I stood in knee deep water for 6 hours last Sunday, duck hunting, and while my toes got a bit chilly a time or two, they warmed right up one I walked around a bit.

Spend the extra money on those fancy waders if you want, but I won't be crying if I rip my cheapies on a fence, or poke a stick through the leg.

Just my opinion.

When I said booties, I meant just the neoprene without any built-in boots. This way I have the option of using my felt boots or other hunting boots.

Hey guys,
Any advise for a guy that is 6'5" and weighs 290lbs? I would like to get a pair of neoprenes but am not sure what is a good brand or if they would even make them to fit me. Thanks in advance.

Slash, depending on budget, LL Bean and Cabela's have ones that will fit your size.
Bentpole, I would use AquaSeal.

For anyone that is hard to fit, cabela's has a lot of tall and stout size neoprenes. remember that they should not be skin tight, the constriction particularly in your feet will cause them to chill much faster than a loose pair will.

I use the stocking foot model as I like to use felts with studs in them for the best footing in streams and on the banks.
