I was interested to read that Pink worms were now available with impregnated salt. This is not a new concept the canny Scots many years ago created Scots dough in which the basic ingredients were salmon eggs and pickling salt. Certainy the salt acted as a preservative for the eggs but it went beyond that. The Scots knew that salmon ceased to feed after they had become adjusted to fresh water. They also knew that in the salt chuck they fed voratiously during the period just before entering the fresh water. Could they have stumbled on a scientific odity "that salmon feeding instincs could be stimulated in fresh water by the presence of salt in the water" I believe that this is the case.
Scots dough has an added attraction,in that a plume of white salt solution can be observed in the water. In slow moving water this plume can be shown to be the path along which salmon and steelhead move from considerable distance as they swim towards the source of this stimulating smell. At the same time the fish can be observed to take the bait readily ,apparently in a feeding state.
Scots dough is a material of unique properties not only does it attract fish but it has a doughlike quality which allows it to be moulded around the head of a fishing fly and remain throughout the casting process.
Canny devils these old Scots.
