Last year I was doing some exploring on the upper Sauk. It was a nice day (about 70 degrees and sunny), but the water was like ice (I was wading in shorts and could not stay in the water for more that 10 seconds or so - and I'm used to wading wet...).

Anyway, i made my way around a bend enjoying the beauty (ie not catching many fish) and admiring the crystal clear ice water, when I spot 2 teanage boys standing chest deep in the freezing river - giggling (the sound and look reminded me of the movie 'deliverance' - is that a banjo i hear?). Then I realized that the water was really only about knee to waist deep, and that they were squatting down. When they saw me, they quickly stood up, pulled up their pants and made there way to the bank - laughing and carrying on. About 30 seconds later is when I saw it. A 6" brown trout. AKA - a floater - heading right at me!! I got back on shore in a hurry and had an inckling to go whoop some a$$, but I was too grossed out and just wanted to go take a shower...

I believe you meant the "boneless brown trout", an entirely different species. wink

You talked about wet wading. I used to wet wade the Sauk all the time in the summer time. But that was in the upper reaches. From White Chuck River and up. I think that I've fished up as far as Weden Creek. This little creek had some bigger fish in it. But that was when you could drive to Monte Cristo. But lately I've gone into light waders. About the only time I ever found it to cold was in June when it first opened. Jim S.

Just remember that there's a stricly enforced Pinch N Release policy on all native Sauk River Brown Trout at The Ranch!

PS. Thank Glub for the high water - seems those browners always move down river on the high water! They are magically "flushed" away! wink
