Gonna jump into the after dark world of glowballing. I have a couple of questions for you guys. Do you really need a flash to charge the ball or does a flashlight work well enough? I tried to find a flash at Sportco, but they are out. Do you fish it plain or with yarn? Do you present it the same way as daytime? Colors, what's best for Steelies? Any tips would be appreciated.

I'll give you a few things that work well for me. 9' med rod loaded with 15# main with a 3' long 15# leader. I like 1/0 hooks with a dime sized glowball no yarn. I use a flash but flashlight is ok. I like to bang the bottom a little heavier at night. Hope this helps.

Trailrat -

I don't know what they cost at sportco, but you can find decent ones at any Kits camera for $20-$30.

RW, has the right idea. All the sportinggood stores are usually out of camera flashes this time of year. I got a regular camera flash from Walmarts camera dept for 14.99. Not as compact as the one they sell at Sportco, but not much bigger either.

I think the camera flash is a must. It's quick and gives the glowball a high charge instantly, where as you need to hold the flashlight over the glowball for a few seconds to give it a charge. I also like to use a chartruse glow yarn with longer pieces in the bait loop. When it glows, I think it gives a larger, more attracting profile.

Trailrat, having a nuclear powered glow at all times is not needed! During high lit nights ie. clear skies or my personal favorite full moon there are times when I may only flash up once every 45 min. providing water conditions are favorable. During darker or less optimum conditions I tend to glow up at shorter intervals.

trailrat,
Ive cought them with a flash or a flashlight i prfer the flash so you can go straight to fishing and not have to worry about the glow for a longer amount of time. also i use yarn so that i can apply shrimp oil and so that the yarn tangles into the teeth and gives you more time to set the hook. heavyer line is a bonus also. personaly i use two orange glowsballs together, i fell it looks like a nucular shrimp. it has worked great for me. good luck

Gotta have a flash. I also think you have to keep that glow ball lit constantly. Fish always hit right after you flash the glow balls. I have good success with white balls with orange dots.

Good question Tyler, Ive always wondered that myself. Ive hooked fish with the lantern going full blast and in the middle of darkness, so my guess would be, no. But Ive run into folks who are insistent on turning that bad boy off while fishing. ANy theries out there on this?

im thinking more of those headlamp where your beam is directly in the water. the lanterns might have an effect on it also.
