It depends on what kind of fishing your dad is going to do?
If he is going to be drift fishing you can not go wrong with a GL2. Especially for someone new to steelhead fishing

Look at the TH rods. they use Rainshadow blanks. You should be able to pick one up for less than what the same rod in a GL2 will cost and be a lil better than a GL3. I now have four TH rods and love them. I hope to order a 5th sometime soon.

I had Little Skookum Custom Rods in Shelton build a steelhead rod from a 1084 Rainshadow blank and it's become my favorite rod. It's beautiful, sensitive, light and yet has alot of power. I've never owned a Loomis rod but have fished several and caught fish with them. They were fine rods as well and I considered buying a Loomis. A Rainshadow blank costs considerably less than a comparable GLoomis and that made my mind up. I feel like I've gotten a rod of Loomis quality, perhaps even better, for less money. My .02.

Rockfish,

they don't sell the rods in stores. you can only get them as a blank. I just e-mail TH and tell them what I want and what colors I want it. soon after I got a rod on my door step that is of GLoomis qaulity or better and customized for me at a lot less money than a new GLoomis in the stores. I might add that RainShadow has a great warranty like GLoomis. so unless you got more money than brains......

Take a look at the Fish Eagle II from Cabelas, sweet rod and cannot be beat in my opinion for the price. They have a IM6+ blank that is dark green, green wrap, and sell for about 80 dollars plus postage. You can buy two and some tackle for the price of one Loomis and they will catch every bit as many fish. Fish on!
