I just switched out my 8lb UG on my float fishing rod for some 14lb Fireline (hi vis yellow) and - wow! I wish I'd have tried this sooner!

Here's some highlights:
1 smaller diameter (14lb is about 6lb mono diameter)
2 no streth
3 very sensitive
4 low memory
5 casts like a dream (much farther than mono)
6 floats better than mono
7 line control and mending much easier
8 faster hook sets (didn't actually try this one yet, but you felt a lot more connected to the float)

Now I just need to catch a fish on it and see how it feels. I'm hoping it doesn't reduce the excitement of the fight (but increase my confidence in my main line).
My confidence in presentation and ability to cover the water was greatly increased over the 8-10lb mono I normally use.
One thing I was not too impressed with is that for a line that was advertised as hi-vis, once it is cast out away from the spool, it wasn't as bright as I expected. I'll have to try it with spinners/spoons/plugs to see if the hi-vis really helps me keep track of the line.

Yes the high vis helps greatly in tracking the line through the drift.
I just spooled up with fire line again for the nate season,it is great line and alows for quicker hook to release time.
You have to be carefull though!Because of it's very low stretch it can be unforgiving.I hooked a bigger native a couple of days ago and lost it because I havent used the line for a while. The fish snapped my leader because the zero strech means you have to set your drag a little lighter.Native steelhead like to flat out bolt on you and if youre not carefull they can load up your gear reel quick!thats what happened to me,with mono I think I would not have lost that fish as quickly, the line also acting as a shock absorber! It was also headed down a pretty rough and long drop that I wasn't willing to chase it down!I still would of lost it!

I currently have the hi-vis fireline on my float rod, and I like it pretty well. My only complaint is it really bites into the spool when I snag up and have to break off. I've had powerpro on before and noticed it doesn't bite into the spool as much. It also seems like a smoother handling line. I'm thinking of going to the hi-vis powerpro. Any comments?

Make sure you tie the appropriate knots with the low or no strech lines, and go easy on that first fish, if it wants to go you have to be ready to let it.

Will the high-vis braided line spook fish if you decide to fish with a spoon. I was thinking about using 14lb fireline on my float rod, but I wanted to be able to use it with a spoon also.

I've been using the 25lb whiplash on my float rod, which I think is 8lb diameter. I wouldn't go any smaller, though. While using 10lb ultragreen leaders, I found the braided line knot actually broke about 10-20% of the time, and I was retying my knots frequently. I think I would probably go with a 30lb braided next time- I don't want my mainline to snap. HT

Power Pro (hi vis) was my first choice, but I was too impatient to order it, so I just went with the easy to find Fireline. Power pro is in the mail...

How does the 25 to 30 line handle on a spinning reel? Can you cast light lures very far?

What are the proper knots to use with braided line??

I do plan to try it with spinnes and spoons. Depending on water clarity, I'll be using 4 to 12 ft UG leader just in case they get spooked by the yellow line.

Thanks,
Chad

I returned to Fireline this week after a long stint on mono. Lost my first fish within 5 seconds....bent the hook out, which reminded me #1: Turn the drag down with braided line, #2: If you fish braided line, you will lose more fish with broken leaders, bent hooks, broken swivels, etc. I fish light floats/jigs, so the problem is worse for me. I may go back to mono (again).

Power Pro all the way! As for the knot problem? It is solved with the tie-master. An easy to use tool that ties a perfect knot everytime! This knot doubled the Strength of Fireline in Berkelys lab! The results with 14# Fireline were this. The Palomar failed at 16.3.....the TieMaster knot held at 32.8# you do the math!!

You can go to: www.tie-master.com

or better yet, come see me at Auburn Sports and Marines booth at the Puyallup Sportsmans Show. I am Pro Staff with Power Pro and will be showing how well the tool works. The tool will be for sale only at Auburn Sports and Marines booth come see me! (far as I know anyway!)
