I just can't seem to figure out this spoon fishing thing. I know its a very affective technique and would like to be able to add it to my arsenal. Any advice would be usefull

In my experience in rivers, spoons are an effective lure for both coho and chinook as well as steelhead. They like plugs are mainly an agression stimulator.
For chinook I like to use them in resting pools at first light in the first pool above heavy water.Chinook on arriving in such pools will circle and attack any foreign species including spoons ;that are present.
For coho a species that will chase rapidly retrieved lures I like to fish spoons in deeper slow pools and along undercut backs with slack water.
For steelhead they are strictly stimulators which can be dead drifted with short swings like escaping minnows and fry. I fish them under a float using a lift and drop action.
Sometimes they work ,often they dont.

How are you currently fishing your spoons? List how your currently doing it so it can be critiqued. Also if you have any specific questions that would be great. I will do my best to help you out.

I was using spoons for coho and just crushing them. I went and bought Bill Herzog's spoon fishing book and picked up some great tips for fishing spoons. Now I use them for steelhead too. The biggest one I have hooked was on a silver stilly spoon.

ls, the most effective spoon method i have used is to get above where the fish are laying and slowly let the spoon flutter down to where the fish are. while this is not always possible, it seems to work the best. summer run steelies will run upstream and attack the spoon as soon as they see it coming. the same idea would work on spinners and plugs as well.
