I'm getting one for my 5wt usally use it in saltwater, does anybody have any recomeendations for a good line clear cold water perferred, striper line was my first choice, but there in 7wt and above, tired of the crinkling on the running line. the line will get used and abused since starting in august its 5-6 days a week, every morniong before work from shore and evenings usually spent along shore in the boat, but now for baby silvers and wintered cutthroat. Ben

Have you looked at the Rio (versi-tip??)? My buddy has it on his steelhead rod and likes it a lot.

Hello again Rockfish, WhatI have done in the past is take my old sinking line, cut it into sections from 1' to 4' and make my own loops. It is very time consuming but worth the trouble when the fish start getting finicky and want their food in a paticular water column. To make the loops get some laquer thinner and Daves flexament, nailknot tool. Stip both ends of the line with the thinner to the lines core(careful not to overcook)peel off the gooey coating, then make a loop on both ends with nail knot tool, and build up new coating by applying several layers of flexament. Hope this helps!

You might want to investigate the Airflo sink tips preoduced in England but available from many American suppliers.
These come in various weights light trout ,trout, and salmon. The salmon tips are on 25lb mono.
They also come in about 7 different sink rates from floating to 13"per sec sink
They are available in two lengths 5' and 10' They have built in loops of braid for loop to loop connection.
I would suggest that the trout weight in 10 ft tips would be appropriate for a 5 or 6 wt line. The tips turn over very easily when fished directly from a dt or wf floating line.

Rockfish-
What #5 are you fishing because if there are many #5's that will be able to throw that #7 15' Striper Veri-tip.

Also you might look into contacing your local shop and seeing if Rio will just send you the running line they use for the Coldwater Versi-tips. It is awesome and it stays soft in the really cold water, has an intermediate sink and has a decent sized head to reduce hinging.

If Rio will send you just the running line with the head, you can purchase the 15' heads (Aqualux, type III, type VI) in a #6 and then you will have no problem casting it on your #5.

Try the Morning Hatch in Tacoma if you dont mind driving south.

You want to find the Rio MonoCore Shooting Line in the Aqualux. This may be hard to find so just have a shop special order it for you. Next pick up a Cortalnd 444 Intermediate #6 (the blue line-normally I would suggest going atleast one line size above your shooting head size but with the very long body-22', that is not necassary) and cut it 22' back. Splice the 22' of the Cortalnd Intermediate into the Rio Shooting Line by the tip.
Place a loop in the rear on the Cortalnd to loop in your tips.
Pick up the Rio Aqualux, type 3 and type 6 heads in a #6. Now you have that Rio 15' Striper Versi-tip in a #6.

Depending upon your rod, you should have no problem casting this setup...sounds like alot of work and it is. You migh be better off buying the #7 and dealing with an overloaded rod.
