I will be heading to Pt Def and troll the slag pile with some bait to begin the salmon opener. Where are you going this weekend and what is the plan of attack?

I'll be fishing Hat island in my sled and probably releasing lots of fish including some legal ones to get a couple over 7 or 8 pounds. I will use flasher and spoon unless the shakers drive me nuts then I will switch to plugs.

Escapee - Where exactly is hat island. I'm pretty sure there's one near padilla bay but it never seemed like a very good salmon spot ~ is this the one you fish? I'm planning on launching at washington park saturday or sunday and either heading across to the islands or if it's a bit rough (and bait is in the area) staying around fidalgo head. Also, is Biz Point (area 7) open. I know that it is closed during most of the salmon fisheries but the regs never said if it was closed now (that I could find anyway).

Last year on opening day I was in a derdy for area 10. I fished out of kingston with my buddy and we got 7. WE C&R 5 cuz we were looking for the derby winner but the biggest we got was 6lbs. The winner was 11lbs. Good luck all that are in the derdy. wink

I will be hitting Hat Island on Sunday. First time for me fishing Hat. Hope it is good. I normally patrol the south sound, Pt. Defiance and Redondo.

Cuz that's that's the only place I can go in my little row boat smile

off topic: SEALS, I HATE SEALS.... THERE are 2 seals, that run back and fourth all over area 11, from southworth to ollala... We stay up late and you can hear them herding the fish... those are the times I wish for a big rifle, and a night vision scope smile dont you hate seals ?

yes, i will be fishing area 11...i was out at redondo last weekend to check things out, no fish to be seen anywhere laugh ...but then again, i dont like catching those slimy fish, i just like to drag my line through the water quietly all morning laugh

the only places ive seen seals are pt defiance and elliot bay, they do get annoying sometimes...i would love to catch one someday, i hear they taste like spotted owl.

I was going to Pt. No Pt. but since they closed the ramp at the resort I'm going to Pt. Defiance to round up a few. If I remember right the tide is pretty low in the afternoon (3.8ft) I sure as hell won't be launching my boat at Eglon unless you truck doesn't mind a saltwater bath!

Skeets13, the nice thing about Pt. Defiance is you can start fishing as soon as you leave the dock. Don't have to go very far and they have fresh herring at the boat house. Troll parallel to shore in the 70-100" of water.

If Pt. Defiance is not working for you try Pt. Dalco. Other good spots include Pt. Robinson or Redondo. I did really well last year at Redondo. rolleyes

ltlcleo,
Interesting that you could catch mature blackmouth under their, I never would have thought that a Blackmouth area, always used to do well there for silvers in the fall though. Let me know how you do, but check the regs Area 10 does not open until March 1 st rolleyes along with the Hood Canal. mad Take it easy.

Easy Limits: I've fished Hat Island region my share of time for blackmouth and later in the summer. If you aren't going with someone real familar with the area, send me an email. I usually go to another spot near there that I think is even better & never a crowd. It seems to always hold fish no matter the tide....
