Hey Gang,
Before I left work this morning, my buddy that I am taking out on Sunday, got into the discussion of our kids fishing. Seems we are in the same boat when it comes to our kids. Everytime I take my little girl (7 years old), she manages to out fish me. Amazing.... first, most and the biggest fish- everytime! Though it does get under my skin, I am thinkful she enjoys fishing with the ol' man despite any weather conditions. Any of you folks in the same boat? What do you think it is with kids?

This is a great problem to have. I have 2 sons one 10 the other almost 2. Whenever my 10 yr old hooks the biggest or most it is most certainly due to all the knowledge I have passed on and patience I have invested . Id trade 10 hookups for 1 for my son......well..maybe not 10 Tight Lines RL

The only "scientific" reason kids (and women) catch more at times is their lower levels of L-serine. That's a chemical that we produce that can repel fish, and men tend to have more of it. Dr. Juice did major studies on it, possibly Berkley too.
Unscientifically, I've decided thru 50 years of fishing and observing that newbies do better because they BELIEVE they will catch fish, rather than complicating the sport with mega-doubts over the wrong lure color, fly pattern, cold fronts, moon stage, etc., etc.! You take these kids/newbies out and they are "positive" they will catch fish. There's a book called "Positive Fishing" by Robert Deindorfer (1981), probably hard to find, but worth looking for.

Kids catch more because they don't care. ( They're just happy to be there with you! ) And God is making sure that they get "hooked" so they can take you fishing when you're too old and feeble to launch the boat anymore. diana

Downriggin, just curious, why does this get under your skin? as a father of 2 who can't wait to take my 2 yr. old son and 6 month old daughter fishing, I wouldn't care if they reeled every fish in.

Isn't it more fun to watch a child catch a fish, especially their first one, than to catch one yourself? They will carry those memories their entire lives.
AK: You know I'm keeping that other seat dry for your son when he's ready.

I don't think kids can outfish their parents. I took my son plenty of times and he didn't get squat. It was so sad he found some tossed herring, on the ramp, and had me take a picture. He seemed to get discouraged often or would just rather play around on the bank. He learned how to drift the less snaggy holes. Last summer I would hook a trout and hand him the pole. Well on the last day of our week-long fishing/camping trip he grabbed his pole and hooked a steelhead and lost it whle grandpa grabbed his pole. He was so excited he had grandpa bait him up with some eggs and caught his first steelhead on his next cast. Here's the picture http://www.netbyte.net/steelheadman/ I've taken him out a couple of times this winter. Can't wait to take him back where he caught his first.

Akkings,
Not as heart-wrenching as I came across. Maybe more of a constant head shake..."How's she do that?"
Two experiences I'll share with you folks:
(1) Last summer drove all the way to Everett to fish Humpy Hollow. This young lady had her limit before dad could even set his downrigger. No kidding- 17 minutes. Trolled the rest of the morning with only 1 fish to my name.
(2) Two weekends ago, the "Gamie" came by for a routine check of us off of Devil's Head. Should have seen his face when he saw her punch card (20 fish to dad's 8). Both he and her laughed at the same time. I got a little jokingly ribbing from him and off he went. Funny but not funny if you know what I mean. Had to be there I guess.
Wholeheartedly I enjoy each and every outting we're on. Wouldn't give it up for anything. It baffles me to no end how it happenes everytme - EVERYTIME!
Truly hope your future experiences with your kids are as rewarding as my have been.
Downriggin'

Remember karma, Tyler. What you say will catch up to you. OK, maybe not until you're a geezer like me, but it'll happen. :p

I feel all your pain, my 6 yr old son, casted hooked and landed his first native steelhead last year on the Bogie, on his first cast of his very first steelhead trip. He told me "dad I thought it was hard to catch steelhead, this is way to easy". Very, very, very humbling experience. Oh well it was great to see and he is hooked for life now.
