Heading to Alaska (Seward Area), July 1-6th for the first time. Unfortunately, I imagine only being able to fish for one or two days and maybe an hour here and there.

Any suggestions on equipment, techniques and locations where I can slip out on my own to get a few fish? Not looking for anyone's 'secret' hotspot, just some decent info to catch a couple fish (don't care what kind of fish or where on the Kenai Peninsula I need to go). Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

bluefin,

Try clicking on the Alaska fishing links here on this site. There is some good general info on rivers, species, run timings, techniques etc. This should help get you started. Also, try the Alaska dept. of fish and game website. There is a lot of good info, plus updated fishing reports during the summer months.

Good luck.

Bluefin,

Seward is more of a terminal fishery known for the Silver run in August/September. There will be some killer fishing going on about 1 - 2 1/2 hours away on the Kenai/Russian for Sockeye and Kings. You will be there for the first part of the second run Kings. You would probably want to fish down below Soldatna for them. The early Sockeye on the Russian will be up in the sanctuary if they open it. Deep Creek and Ninilchik will be in the middle of their King runs. Your week is kind of a tweener time for that area.

Good luck.

Bluefin,
You will have a shot at some fiesty, fresh sockeye with great bank access on the Kasilof, just a few miles from Soldotna.
Plenty of access, plenty of fish, depending on commercial netting schedule.
Big fun on steelhead gear.
Fish below the highway, ask about 'peoples hole'.
Fresher fish and less crowded than Russian river.

Thanks, to all for the helpful responses.

Looks like I may want to stay closer to Soldotna for a day or two.

Any chance of catching a sockeye in spawning colors that first week of July? Grew up seeing pictures of Alaska rivers full of those green and red fish. If I can't catch one, can I at least take pictures of them somewhere in early July?

Thanks again. Good Fishin.
