Have any of you ever seen whales in the Chehalis river? I was out there last night and had one swim by us at Friends Landing. That is 11 miles or so from the salt I think. I have seen seals, sea lions, and caught flounder that far up. I have a picture of the flounder even. I was just wondering what it was doing so far up and if there really were that many fish in the river for it to eat. Since I am on the weird, what is the weirdest thing any of you have seen or caught while fishing. And for those say me, Haha. Old joke.

neither of these happened to me but i'll tell anyway.

On the columbia my buddie was sturgeon fishing and his rod went down. he set the hook and they fought it for 45mins and never saw it once. they finally got it to where they saw it and it turned out to be a 12ft LOG bouncing down the river rolleyes WHAT AN IDIOT! HAHAHAHA

My other friend said he and his dad saw a seal in the snohomish a ways up from the mouth, i asked his dad and he verifyed it. eek

Years ago when I was a wee little lad, I went fishing near the KFC in downtown Olympia where Capitol Lake enters Budd Inlet. They had a dock where you could fish, and it was open back then. Caught many a flounder.

Anyway, one day after C&R'ing my third grebe (sp?) for the day, everyone gasped. I looked up and there was a gray whale surfacing in between the two bridges. Pretty cool sight for an 8 year old. First whale I ever saw.

Lived on Grays Harbor all my life, never heard of a whale in the Chehalis. Is this a early April Fool's joke? I think an event like that would make the paper for sure and even the big city tv news. I let you know if it makes our paper. Did you do any good at Friend's?

I can verify that. I've seen harbor seals as high up as the fishermen's park, above Snohomish and headed upstream.

I am not sure what the whale was. It was mid river and it was dark. Only knew it was by the size of the body and my spotlight. At first I thought it mightbe a sea lion, but it was too big and made too much noise clearing the blow hole. It would dive and come up about every 30 feet or so. Heading back to the salt. We watched it for about 300 yards or so. I wish I would have had my camcorder. Oh, no fish for 8 hours of fishing. Are the nets in?

I've heard of seals as far up as Bonneville Dam on the Columbia and have personally seen a few between Longview and Camas. But I'm wondering if they venture above the dam, and for that matter if it's even possible for them to make it above the dam. Anyone ever seen a seal above Bonneville?

I had a strange sighting of a 12' Six Gill Shark while fishing for Cutts on a summer evening years ago. Trolling real slow and tight to shore in a 10 Livi I look up and swimming about 15' away is this huge shark. We both parralled the beach for the amount of time it took me to reel in my Dick Nite. As soon as I shut off the electric and made a pull on the outboard he slowly slipped down into the water and disappeared. Made for an increase in heartrate for sure. I know they arn't aggressive but they sure do get big.

I have heard of seals from two different poeole around the sultan area of the sky. One of the seals got shot with an .06, funny how no one saw who did it.
Also once I caught a catfish in Marysville in the slough, not all that wierd but it was kind of salt water and I have never caught one there since or heard of another one.

On the Hoh river I saw a seal two weeks ago about twelve miles upriver. Several years ago I was bank fishing the Hoh above the canyon and had an encounter with a seal I thought at the time was sea-lion. I had waded out to cast to a pocket across the river and about twenty feet to my right on a dead silent day this seal comes up out of the water and blows air and seal snot all over me.

I caught four fish in that hole...he must have been there for a reason!

Never seen a whale in the river, I doubt one could make it in past the first riffle of the Hoh

The summer after Jaws came out, I was fishing with my dad up on the coast of Maine. We were trolling around this island in not much more than a skiff and we saw the big dorsal-like fin just floating upright in the water. It wasn't moving, but from the size of it, it looked like whatever it was attached to must have been as big as our boat.

It just floated there and floated there and after a while we motored a little closer and then closer still. It didn't move. We finally came up on it from behind and it was like there was nothing in the water immediately behind the fin. But the fin was sticking up out of the water what seems to me to have been two feet.

It took a moment or two, but then we saw that there was this really big, black mass in front of the fin. We motored around and then we could see this giant fish head attached to the fin, with no body in back of the fin.

It was a great big sunfish and it is the weirdest thing I have seen in person while fishing. Just a great big fish head and dorsal fin sticking out of the water. Very docile. It didn't move an inch the whole time we were checking it out.

We got a hugh sun fish on video summer last off westport. They are strange looking. Reminded me of a giant bass that stoped at the dorsel. It swam right up to the boat and looked at us totally unconcerned. Thing must have weighed 300 lbs. The next day we saw 4 killer whales chowing down on a gray. the grays gut sack was full of air flooting on top the water and this one adult keep rolling over it like it was playing with it. Didn't have any camera that day, still or motion which ticked us off.
