I like blood quill spey marabou, although I pick up bargain-variety black marabou for tying wooley buggers and egg-sucking leeches in bulk...bought a package each of flashabou and krystal flash several years ago and have not yet used half of either--I usually just use a couple strands as highlights.

Palmer, or Palomar?

To palmer hackle, tie in the tip and spin around the hook shank, working forward. I don't usually double up marabou; other hackle material is better supported if you tie in two tips, wrapping the second between the first.

The palomar knot is useful for tying carbon microfilament lines such as PowerPro to swivels and hooks. See the links below:
http://www.fish4fun.com/palomarknot.htm
http://www.fishspiderwire.com/Uniknot/pal.html
http://www.steelheader.net/knots/polamar_knot.htm

Wishing you luck on your surgery--stock up on the tying materials!

I've had (5) knee surgeries. My advise to you is start doing your exercises from the very start. Work thru the pain and don't let the joint stiffen up. Hang in there and good luck.

Thanks alot guys,
The knot I was wanting to learn was the Palmer, I use the Palomar all the time. Is the Palmer knot just for Hackle?? Any how I will keep digging around the web.
Excercise has been apart of my daily routine for a long time. I just hope I am doing the right ones.

Tie it on and fling it!!!!!! :p

WW,

I like to use the guard hairs from rabbit or artic fox for my collars- flies last a little longer. However, I ocassionally use marabou for my spey flies. Rabbit collars will look very bulky when dry, but when fished, they thin down a lot and provided superb action... If you need examples, check out:
Steelheader.net

Top 5 flies are mine. They are tied Ed Haas style- indestructible! Email me if you have any questions (email address is in my profile).

Hope this helps!

That was a really good sight but it did not have the infamous palmer knot. But, boy those were some great flies. laugh
Please can somebody give me a link to this elusive knot. smile

Wing, palmering is not a knot, as stated above, it is a tying technique, of tying in the tip of the feather, and wrapping the feather around the shank of the hook. whether it be Marabou,Schlappen, or Saddle Hackle, it gives life to the fly or jig.
if you would like to see some examples of some premium Steelhead jigs, check out our website.
all of our jigs feature palmered hackle.

There are lots of materials to tie with out there and my favorites are schlappen and hackle. By combining the two you can create jigs or flies that have a fullness to them and create a profile that is unique once it's in the water. Have fun tying.
