Was just wondering when buying a new rod what spec am I looking for? I go every summer fishing on the Atnarko and Bella Coola rivers. This year we'll be mostly catching Chum but would also like a rod that will be able to handle a big king. When we fish for kings we mostly throw row and hot shot for them.

The reel I have is a Abu-Garcia Ambassator 6600 w/ 25lb test.

So what do I look for when rod shoping? rod leangh, line wt, lure wt??????

Any help will be greatly helpful.

Thanx for the help!!!!

look at the g loomis HOT SHOT rods they have some that they say will handle the biggest salmon you can find.

Determine the average size of the fish you're likely to catch and the line weight your experience or best advice tells you it will take to manage them. Check a number of rods with that line capacity in the lengths and brands you've seen others who seemed competent use in the fishery you'll be participating in. Buy the best one you can afford.

I posted a question awhile back about a halibut rod. Someone suggested checking out a pawn shop. Guess What? I found a decent quality halibut rod and reel for $50 and to top it off I couldn't resist picking up a Buzz Ramsey IM7 rod for $13.00 and a Shimano spinning reel for $20. Word of caution though... before buying at a pawn shop, be sure you know the prices of the items new and never pay more than 50% of the new price. You can pay full retail at a pawn shop if you're not careful.

ET,

Thanx for the suggestion...but where I live(Denver) the chances of finding a rod at a pawn shop that will handle a big fish are pretty slim. I am going to try though. never know.

Thanx
