It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Why waste loose eggs when you can turn them into little gems like those? Not only do they look tasty, but they are tough and allow you to fish a bait pretty much until you lose the rig. Thanks for the pics, hawk.

You can Pro-glo your loose eggs too. If you need to down size for low flows and clear water, bags are the only way to fly. On the tiny creeks in Door County Wisconsin and North Shore of Lake Superior, I will free drift them in slow pools with a bag that is about the size of a dime or less, on four pound test. Those fish will come out from underneath the cut banks to munch on these little nuggets. Fresh out of the fish, no salt, uncured is sometimes the only ticket. Good luck.

Those are nice looking spawn-sacks. What do you use for netting or is it a trade secret?

I use about 6 different colors to tie bags with. Blue, pink, chartreuse, orange, red, white.
I use bridal veil from a craft shop for the white and blue. The other colors come from a couple of sources. Atlas and Spawnee both make these colors. You can buy it in 2 or 3 inch wide rolls, or in pre cut squares. I use the rolls, because I can screw around with many sizes without wasting a bunch of material. Don't waste your time with the little spawn tying machines. It's way faster doing it by hand.
If there is enough interest in this, I could mail Bob a bunch of digi pics, and he could post it in the Tips section. If you can't find the netting out there, let me know, and I'll give you a phone number in Duluth Minnesota where you can order it from. Good fishin to ya.

I've used the Atlas netting and wasn't really happy with results, it seemed too stiff. I wanted something softer like nylon material with bigger mesh. mine caught fish but I quit using them long ago. I tried recycling extra sand shrimp- chopping them up and freezing them in shrimp oil.

Spawnee is the softest stuff. I agree on the Atlas netting. It's as stiff as bridal veil. I usually put it in the sink and work it through my hands for a while to soften it up. The Spawnee is best by far.

Hawk,a question for you. What kind of shape is the meat in, in a fish that has single eggs in it?

Some fish are colored up, and soft, others are chrome as a dime, and running loose eggs. It all depends on water.
If the water is really clear, low and warm, the fish will sit at the mouth of the rivers until the first good shot of water. They'll blow up the river, and do their thing in the matter of just a few days.
If I keep them, I try to keep loose chromers, and keep the eggs for bait. I'll give the fish to my neighbor for the grill. I'm not a big fan of eating steelies, so I generally ask a couple people at work if they want a fish. If so I'll keep one or two for eggs and hand them over to a friend. Otherwise they all go back in the water. I'll take a lake trout on the smaker any day over a steelie. Your coho's are a whole differnt story. Good Eats.
