what is the best outboard for 15 horses, am looking to buy one, a guy told me suzuki is. they make all the parts for evinrude/johnson to 70 horses. heard that honda have a corrosion problem, mercury have the most warranty repairs, yamaha have not heard anything about them, if some one knows about outboards what would you advise for one?

hey little cleo I got your message, I dont have your number so give me a call. Ben

Yamaha all the way, I have a 25hp, tons of hours, easy to start, trolls down real nice, idles all day with no hiccups, runs for days on 6 gal of gas. It's a 97' model seen lots of salt, no corrosion. It's still under warranty, I got a 6 yr warranty, Yamaha added 4yrs for free and have never had it near a shop. It pushes my 15' smokercraft near 35 mph also. Suzuki would be my 2nd choice, if for some reason Yamaha quit making outboards.

Didnt somebody mention on here before that Yamaha makes the powerheads for Mercury now.
Also, I know a guy that wrenched on outboards a few years ago.He told me Suzuki is a good engine till something goes wrong. Then look out.Something about the way the pistons, rods etc were put together, I think.Been 6-7 years ago so that might be toatlly irrellevent now though.

I have had thirteen Evinrudes and have never had a problem until this last one. New models with the FICHT system seem troublesome. I have no idea or experience with the production since Bombadier took over. I agree with earlier reply that the single best brand would be Yamaha in two stroke or either Yamaha or Honda (a toss-up) in four stroke. My family has three Yamaha 90's and one 150 in two stroke. The 90's are circa 1992 and have never missed a beat (once we had water in fuel but motors weren't to blame). The 150 is only two years old and seems fine. I suggest you pretend you already own one and call for service work, just for a test. How many dealers offer service in your area and what problems have they had with models with which you are interested. Just an idea, good luck! smile

Rockfish,

I just bought a 2002 25 hp 4 Stroke Yamaha for my 14 ft Lowe. I have only put about 10 hours on it so far but absolutely love it. Trolls down to 1.4-1.5 mph and has some getty up. Pushes my Lowe around 27mph with two people on board. I have heard nothing but good things about Yamaha's and that is why I bought mine not to mention that I got a five year warranty with it.

Hey Ben:

I've got a 2000 4 stroke 9.9 Suzuki on a 15 foot Smokercraft and it will push it along at 20-21 believe it or not. I started with a 12 footer, it developed leaks, Smokercraft replaced it with a 15 for a few hundred more, but I kept the motor, although I'm looking to upgrade to a 25 Yamaha in a couple months. I too have a freind with one on a 15 foot Gregor and it performs flawlessly anywhere from flat out to dead slow. The Suzuki sure broke in hard - it was over a year before it would settle down and troll, but now that the rings have seated it is performing flawlessly. I'll be looking to sell it in June, probably a bit small for what you want it for, but make someone on a big boat a great trolling motor.

I had a 50Hp 4 stroke Yamaha on my 18 g3.... It was great. Quiet, great mileage, easy starting. I liked it so much, I put 2 of them on my new 20 ft hewescraft searunner, 100Hp and 8Hp four strokes. Great warranty too. The most common problem you'll have is screwing up the starter turning the key when its already running...its that quiet!

I have a 15Hp Yamaha 4 stroke on a 14' aluminum and it hauls butt (25 MPH) with just me in it. Trolls great too.
Now a days you just can't beat a Yamaha. Super easy maintenance also. Last week, I did a complete tune up on it in about two hours. Gotta change the oil often if you troll alot. smile
