Well I'm by no means an 'old timer,' nor am I some god-like fisherman, but I think I can answer your question.
It's all about experience man. Emulation is great, but just tossing what someone else is tossing means nothing. Fishing is truely an art. It has a 'finess' about it.
I remember when I first started salmon / steelhead fishing, I couldn't lay into anything. I always asked people what they were doing, asking for help and advise. I took all their help for what it was, and tried my best to put it to good use. And then one day it happend, my first silver, actually my first silver was also my first day I limited out. Ever since then, I've only increased my fishing skills, and now once in a while I find someone asking me the same questions I use to ask...feels good too
Indeed, it's all about paying your dues. Thats what it comes down to. You've got to put in the time to learn what you're doing out there, and then, if the river 'decides' to be nice to you that day, you'll lay into some fish. Sounds corny, but thats how I look at it. Like everything in life, the best way to become good at something, is to practice it...the best way to become great at something, is to try to learn as much as possible about it, and then put it to practice. You will only get out of life what you put into it...oh no, going off on a tangent again.
<--------Engineering student so you'll have to forgive me, I tend to find myself wondering into and out of topics sometimes
Anyways, practice practice practice my friend.
