A heads up to those that are shopping for a new gps unit. I stopped in to buy a map 76 and there was the new 'S' version sitting on the shelf. They tripled the memory capacity, put in an electronic compass, a barometric altimeter, and retained all the original features of the 76. They also lighten the color of the casing. I had to fork out an extra c-note for it but it is one cool devise if your in the market. Very user friendly as well as floats!

I am hoping to have a larger boat by next spring. One big enough to fish the bouy 10 fishery and I would like your thoughts on a GPS. I bought one of Garmins first GPS's and I played with it for weeks. I must have a mental block for some things (VCR programing encluded)as it was not user friendly to me. I can run an HP 12C through its paces and don't have trouble remembering how to do the steps to obtain what I want to know. My question is: are these things any easier to run then the first model? Do they make a model that is has fewer steps? I just want to be able to get
back to the point from which I started when the fog rolls in.

BS,
I run a 12c for my day job as well so I know what you are talking about as I had mental block when I first started with these things years ago. I learned on an early Magellan which was French compared to the 76S so I was hesitant about the whole deal. I went on a float trip 4 years ago in AK and borrowed a buddies Garmin GPSIII. It was a cake walk compared to my earlier experiences. That, along with feedback from the Boards is what lead me to the 76. You can switch it to the track feature and it will automatically save waypoints at set intervals which you can then backtrack on. Or, you can manually save them as you head out. I started messing with it without reading the directions (imagine that) and was able to figure out most all of it in minutes. Then I read the manual and learned a few shortcuts that were cool. I would wager you would do just fine.

Does the S model have the tides built in? I know the Garman 76 does and its waterproof...

Jeff'e'd, The Map76S comes with the same features as the Map76 (including tide/celestial tables) along with the other features mentioned above. Pretty cool units.
