about a week or so ago i posted a question asking where to start, this is sort of a follow up/ next step question. i'm thinking about heading out to either possession pt. area or pt. jefferson above bainbridge is on monday. never fished salt before, anyone have a suggestion between these two?

i was told to try cut plug herring behind a dodger, or a range of spoons with and without a dodger. sound about right? what size dodger is big enough, i'd rather go light then heavy, but i'd much rather catch fish then not.

by the way, thanks everyone your suggestions really helped.

Sushi,
Use the search feature to look for info on Possession or Possession Bar. There was an excellent post several months back on how fish this area, where to drop crab pots and where the shrimping is good..

Sushi: If it was me, I would go to Possession Bar, it is one of the best places all of Puget Sound. But it really depends on your boat. Possession is really exposed to south winds with miles of open water to build up waves. Most of the time is just fine, but it can get really snotty there so use appropriate pre-trip & during trip judgement. Also, I see you are from Seattle. Launch at Edmonds or Everett, not Mukilteo. The Mukilteo launch is famous for how dangerous it is. Locals go there to watch boats get destroyed when wind & currents are just right. Doesn't take a big gale force winds there either. I onced had waves crashing on top of my bow (yes on top, & I don't mean sloshing up) in only 20-25 knot winds there, which caught converging tides/current just right. I got to see two other boats trashed that day, I went to Everett instead. As to fishing method & you are new to salt water fishing...I will assume you don't have downriggers then. If no downriggers, leave the flashers at home. Until the migrating kings come in heavy (mid-July until end of August), then the silvers in the fall, you won't get down deep enough. Instead go with mooching cut plug herring or jigging white jigs. I will leave the where to fish Possession to your board search, which has lots of info on which side of the bar for which tide, etc. If you have forecast of moderate to high south winds, look for more protected places to go i.e clay banks & slag pile in Tacoma, Pt. Dalco near Tacoma, Dolphin Point, Elliot bay on weekends when open.
Also keep the Shipwreck to Possession area in your memory log for Sept & Oct, its great silver fishing up there then, & all shallow fishing (25'-60')

sushi,

Take it from an Old Salt, laugh I'd be fishing
the Kingston triangle just north of Pt.Jefferson.
Lots of Kings to be C&R'd up there. Should be good for local silvers too...fish the rips and
seams. wink

As for methods, check out a new website called
Salmon University, it will be very helpful.
