Took a fellow member DanS fishing out in the ocean during the holiday and had some good fishing.
First of all, It was a pleasure to fish with a guy like Dan that knows his stuff.....none of that,"can you tie my hooks stuff". Dan you are welcome anytime, just give me a ring, I try to hit Westport every Sunday.

Now for the report, the water was very lumpy and rough and the wind was almost unbearable, but fishing was still good. Since it was too windy for us to mooch, which I like best, we opted for the Scotty downriggers.

We caught many kings on that trip releasing many to boot. Our largest fish on my boat was in the mid twenties, with plenty of teeners to go around. Fish have been running deeper this year than last with most caught in the 75 to 80 range. Most fish caught have been Kings with the silvers running kinda small so far.

We have been running about 18 to 20 miles out and have fished in up to 245 feet of water. My bait of choice is green label herring, but anything will work. My buddy was using a hotspot and baitbuster lure exclusively on his boat and boated one fish that was in the high 30's....he did not even bring bait.

If you can handle the water....head on out. If some of you are looking for a ride, send me an E-mail and if I have an open seat...I may ask you to join me, all I ask is to pay your fair share for gas and bait, etc.
Hope this helps a few of you out, I have attached a picture of a couple Kings.

Ng

Nice fish and thanks for the report. Boat and van are loaded and were heading out right after work today. Others reporting the same thing. Fish are running deeper and gaining weight laugh See ya on the water.

Hey fellas.....

If FishNg1 is offerin', you should be lining up. He had us in fish pretty much all day, and all his equipment is top-notch. Even though I was kinda green from the rough water, I was happy to be heading home with a couple nice Kings.

Thanks for the invite, Steve. I'd like to do it again. laugh

Get out to the ocean, folks. You can't beat an ocean-fresh King on the BBQ! cool

NG,
I wouldn't mention Dan & tie my hooks for me too much. I still remember a certain bogus knot on a K-16 that he tied on a trip to the Quinalt. laugh
Is the 2:1 Ratio rule still in effect? rolleyes
That's 2 Bud's to 1 Henry's per fish boated.
Seriously though, I blame Dan for reincarnating a fishing monster within me that I hope to never lose again.
Maybe he will stop forgetting to give me a call when he goes out. mad
I hope all who read, post or lurk here might one day be able to fish with this guy. If you do, just remember to bring extra smokes. wink
I also helps to be able to sing the Husky fight Song although I never tried that myself.

Uh, oh. Cat's out of the bag. laugh

Dammit, grump, I knew that was a ten year knot. As in, the failed knot that haunts you for a decade. eek

Actually, it's just a tactic I use to make sure guys DON'T ask me to tie their hooks! laugh

FishNg1:

Nice fish, thanks for showing me what I missed out on. rolleyes 20 mile boat rides don't seem all that fun to me though, but usually a hot bite will cure that. laugh

Hopefully we can tackle the local scene sometime this month.

FishNg1- I hope you check this as it seems my email is down. I will thank you in advance for any info you might have. My fishing partner and I haven't been out in quite a while and I'm wanting to get some info on Westport. First, do you know of any good charters to go on. Second, I have a 21 foot Trophy anc was wondering if it would be safe to go out of Westport in. If so, what is the best time to cross the bar going out and coming in??? Do you just follow the charter fleet? I have been out in the ocean out of Ilwaco but never out of westport. We are thinking about going this Sunday but if we are not going to be safe would rather plan something else. Thanks again for any insight.
Sincerely, Canyon Man
P.S. We have both fished buoy 10 for years and do know how to catch fish, however with young families safety is our number one goal. If you have room maybe we could trade a trip on the cow or a float down the Satsop in the fall. My pager number is 206-810-2318 if you would rather not post this info here.

CanyonMan, a 21 foot would be just fine in most cases out at Westport. BUT....just remember to use your head, keep an eye on the weather report, and current conditions. Also make sure you have reliable equiptment, like a Gps, VHF proper safety gear and definitely a good running kicker motor.

I have never been on a Charter, but I am sure there are many on this board willing to suggest some good skippers. Shoot me an E-mail and we can discuss some future fishing perhaps.

If you have conquered the Ilwaco bar,
then you should have no trouble with the Westport bar, just do as Dan stated and look up the conditions on the web before heading out and cross during the best times such as slack tide.

Ray.....Next time could you get all of the fish in my photos for me? Somehow the tails were missing on those fish...LOL.

Heres some more from this last Sunday...

Canyon Man,

Call Geoff Grillo at Advantage Charters, 800-689-5595, he's a good guy and he knows how to put you on fish.
