Where are some good to decent places to fish from shore for bright salmon? I have never tried this method and have heard that it can be successful. What are some options on gear to use?

If you don't mind traveling to Tacoma, you could try walking out to Point Defiance. You have to do this on the outgoing tide, when the tide is low enough to let you out and you have to allow yourself enough time to get back after the tide turns.
If you aren't familiar with Point Defiance, you are walking out along Owens Beach. It's best to look for a tide cycle that will allow you out there at first light. You can park where the boat launchers are parking. The park will not be open that early, but I never had a problem. It's a little bit of a hump from there out to the point, but its the best shore fishing I have found.
You will need waders.
Throw buzz bombs. 4-inch wide used to work for me. Either the gray or the blue.
You can also try plug-cut herring under a float. Just don't monopolize the entire point with long-lining if others are trying to fish also.
You'll like the spot. There is a ledge and the water drops right off. The current always moves and the structure draws bait. It's like fishing in a river. Throw "upstream" and let it drift down and across. Many strikes come on the buzz bomb while just letting it drift, flutter and sink in the current. You don't have to worry about the bottom - you should never reach it.

if you can get to the west side of the sound try Point no Point.
The silver fishing should be picking up there soon or try Point Wilson near Port Townsend the run is slowly moving in here.
As for gear I use a medium action steelhead setup and a 2.5" white with green stripe buzz bomb.
Hope that helps some.

Shore fishing off Duwamish Head in West Seattle can be good and I've heard of people casting from the beach in Lincoln Park also, but I've never done it.

Try Eglon (3 miles south of PNP) in August. Go 200 yards south of the boat launch. This area is popular with fly fishers and can be really good for silvers. It can also be fished in a canoe or float tube.

Can also be fished in a float tube.....
Man that would be a blast, I bet they pull you around a little also. Do you ever have to worry about the tide taking you out or along ways from where you started?

4Salt I used to do the Edmonds Pier thing allot. It is kind of dangerous on the walk in and the walk out. People do not look behind when they cast. You can hear the hooks whizzing buy your ear.

Leadchucker - I use 100 feet of nylon twine and a 10 pound downrigger ball for an anchor - works great. Take a fly rod with candlefish imitation and a casting rod w/buzz bomb, and you are ready for anything!

EXCELLENT, I must give this a try one of these days.
So many fish, so little time.

Thanks guys for all the advice. That float tubing for salmon sounds like a blast!!! I will also have to give that a try. Any particular patterns work better than others? Does not sound like you are going far offshore.

Here are a few more. Bush Point on Whidbey Island, although it may be closed. Deception Pass and Keystone state park, also on Whidbey Island. Hooked kings, silvers, and pinks here. Biggest king was twenty pounds. Ediz Hook in Port Angelas. Cast right from the hook between kelp beds. Have hooked kings and sivlers here. To ten pounds. Westport boat basin and jetty, BIG silvers, few kings. And last but not least, under the Narrows bridge. Steep hike, but good fishing for silvers. Not sure if you can still park under bridge since 9/11 though. I use castmasters in 3/4 ounce, chrome w/ blue or green stripe. Buzz bombs work too.

i highly recomend the claybanks at point defiance if there's a minus tide. I've been seeing a lot of nice silvers running through there (they've been somewhat picky though). i'm going back saturday to get me one
