Any of you have recommendations for fishing lodges in Alaska or British Columbia? I'm looking for a place with great fishing, reasonable prices, and that is not too crowded. Timing around the end of August. Is this too late for King Salmon? Any suggestions would be appreciated. By the way, have any of you heard of Hakai Lodge. Their website seems interesting, but would love to hear from people who have been there. Thanks!

I have been to Hakai a couple of times, it can be a great fishery if you can time it right. Haikai is really subject to a run of salmon going thru, they do not seam to hang around to feed, they just pass thru. I have been all over the BC west coast and lower Alaska. E-mail me and i will send you more info on some lodges i would suggest.

Kai, you can probably get any two of those three easily. Great fishing that is cheap will usually be crowded. Great fishing that is uncrowded will usually be either expensive or require some difficulty in getting to it.

That said, there is oodles of fishing in AK at this time of the year. There is road fishing on Kodiak for silvers pretty soon that would be cheap. You'll see lots of people, but there will be room for fishing. Same for Cordova, Prince Edward Island, and the Kenai area.

Yes, you are too late for freshwater kings - those runs are over at this time.

Someone else will have to help with BC, I haven't fished there for salmon.

What kind of fish can you catch in Hong Kong area waters? Is it mostly saltwater fishing or do you have streams? Are there very many sportfishermen?

Thanks everyone for the advice. JR - thanks for the advice on BC - I'll follow up. By the way, not much fishing in Hong Kong, kindof like fishing off Manhattan. Having grown up in North Carolina, I definitely miss fishing on a regular basis. I will be moving to Seattle shortly, so I'm looking forward to fishing again!

Thats is great news that you will be in Seattle.
It will not take you long to find the town of Forks Wash. It's on the Olympic Pininsula and in my most humble opinion it is the closest thing to a fishermans dreamworld as one will ever see. If you don't know about it you are in for a truly
great surprise. It is within driving distance for ever weekend you want to fish. smile

Kai-
If you want to experience the ultimate in coho fishing...go to the Tsiu River out of Yakatut, AK.

It is a very small river with one of the largest runs of coho in all of the World...plus they are all big.

In a typical year, it is not uncommon to see 100 fish days for a flyfisher for coho averaging 12 pounds...many pushing 18 and some over 20.

But this isnt a typical year...because the fish prices are so low, they are not going to commercial fish which in general takes about 30% of the run...so instead of catching 100 big ass coho in a day, you'll catch 130. eek eek

You fly into the Tsiu out of Yakatut. It has wonderful accomadations, is uncrowded aside from the oodles of brown bears and you motor up and down the river on ATV's fishing for the coho.
If you are intrested, let me know, and I'll get you a number to call to get some further info.

Sparkey, you can't believe what Dennis and Greg tell you. They're fishermen, and they lie like rugs. It's really only about 40 to 50 fish a day. wink And you can tell them that I said so.
