Just moved to Seattle from New York City. I didnt do any Salmon fishing out there (a few Coney Island White Fish maybe). I'd like to do some fishing here. I have a ton of questions and would be grateful for any advice any of you fine fisherman can provide. I dont have a boat, and since I live near Myrtle park, I've gone down there a couple times, to the pier (I think its #89?). I've tried to watch what others were doing, but havent seen anyone catch a fish (been there maybe 6 times/2 hours a pop). Still the fisherman there insist they've pulled alot fish from there.
1. Is this a decent place to fish? Is it the right time of year/month to be fishing for salmon there? Is there somewhere else I should go instead where I could fish without a boat?
2. The technique I see most using is jigging a buzzbomb. Do you think this is the best technique for this spot? Should I scent the lure?
3. Any other suggestions at all for location/technique for a guy without a boat.
Thanks, Cheers.

It would be difficult for anyone to summarize northwest fishing tactics on a forum like this. But you could...
1. Take some time and read through this board. Most of your questions have likely been answered at one time or another.
2. Pick up a book or two on the type of fishing you want to do. Get it at a decent sporting goods store and ask questions of the staff.
3. If you have the money, go on a guided trip.

Thanks guys for the advice but......As for river fishing, I love that, and have been trying drift-fishing for steelhead on the skykomish every chance I get. Thing is, this pier is so close to where I'm livin and people swear they catch fish there, so it would be nice to be able to fish on those occasions when I just dont have time to get to the river. The things I thought maybe you could provide some insight on: Are there really fish there? If so during what month/week/time of day? Is jigging with a buzzbomb the best way, or should I use bait? Are there better spots close to that pier for someone without a boat?
I've looked on this site and others, read some books, and asked fishermen and at the tackle shops, but everyone says something a lil' different. I just thought you folks might have some observation for a beginner. Thanks

Go take a look at the pier in west Seattle. I know they catch nice kings off of that pier in the early mornings using Buzz Bombs.

Chovie, I used to fish that pier because I live up the street. It was close but it does not produce like others. You will have better luck if you want to catch Chinook from the Seacrest pier. Yes there are fish in the Puget sound, and some will be caught from that pier. As far as what day of the week , you will have to spend countless hours like everyone else down there to get a shot at them. I consider that pier to be more of a relaxing place after work but not a serious place to catch fish.

You will have better luck hitting the rivers next month for Salmon. The Green river is very close to Seattle and it has Steelhead and Salmon.

If you want to catch Salmon from the pier, goto Seacrest and use Darts and Websters, BuzzBombs, etc... Do it early in the morning. I go diving a lot near seacrest and it is always crowded with guys, but they seem to catch a lot of fish.
