hello to all,my hunting partner was hit by a car yesterday and broke her hide leg.the vet says 1500-2000 dollars to fix.my question is would anybody spend that to have their dog fixed.the other alternative is have the leg amputated for about $400.or have it put down. frown any suggestions would be helpful.

Sorry to hear of your situation. If you're tight with your pooch, you do what you can.

We spent about $800 to have a rubber ball removed from our Golden's stomach. Too big to puke, too big to pass. There was no question as to whether or not we'd do it, but to us he's a special guy and was worth it, even if he's a bone head. The vet gave us the ball back, and we still have it. Out of reach, though.

Consider this.....can you still afford the basics (food, clothing, and shelter) if you have her patched up?

Other than that, it's how you feel about pets, and why you have 'em. To some people they're members of the family, and to others they're livestock. I don't think we can help you make a choice, but you need to think about all the variables and come to your own conclusion. Good luck to you......

I must say I would spend the $$$, Hope I never have to go through it. Does Doc say your bud would make a full recovery?

This may sound crazy to a lot of people and probably normal to a lot as well, but I would spend the money on my dog. My wife and I don't have any kids except our dog and cat so they basically are our kids.

When my pooch was 5 months old he was hit and shattered his pelvic bone. Long story short, he's been hunting perfectly for the last three years.

If you can afford it then do it (unless it's your cat.) wink

Sorry to hear about the pup, how many vets did you check with? Unless there are serious complications with the break the price sounds a little steep. If it was my little brown buddy I would have it done

sorry to hear that about the pup, i would spend the money, dogs bring so much joy, amputation wouldnt kill his spirit, but how would you go thru life without a leg, not so good..im not trying to guilt trip, but pets are unique, im sure the vets will take payments, and i would definately check with another vet..for sure..maybe go to canada, lots cheaper for everything else, why not dog care? anyways..hope he/she recovers.. **berkley boy**

I think that sounds a little steep also. Our German shorthair got into bad cheese a few months back and we nearly lost her. She was in the dog hospital for almost two days and virtually on life support. The bill was around a thousand.
FYI: This was very moldy cheese that inadvertently didn't quite make it to the garbage can. The first thing they thought it
might be was a compost problem. Digging in compost piles is dangerous too dogs.
Hopefully all will heal nicely though. smile

Sorry to hear about your dog.
We had a Daschund and he needed a back surgery and had cataracts removed in his old age. Months and months of therapy helped he was very happy. He was not in pain any more but it was woth it. I know some people can't justify spending a lot of $$ on their pets but I would, it is part of your family. We had him for almost 3 years more. At the age of 14 we had him put to sleep for different complications that was not operable. frown

thanks for all the help everyone.refro goes under the knife monday morning for repair of broken femur.i took some advice from here and took her to a different vet but the cost is about the same.we have to have a specialist do the surgery and they are quite spendy.but to me and the wife she is worth every penny, as she is our only kid:) thanks again for the help and input.

Hell Ya' I'd do it. Our lab had $1700 worth of bills 3 yrs ago. At the time we had no kids so she was it,it was tough signing all the checks, but what the hell it's only money. I also played shuttle for six days, taking her between the emergency hospital and our vet when the emergency hospital closed in the morning. We looked at it this way...if we put her down,it was gonna cost us at least $500 for a new pup,and all the time it took to re-train for hunting. Hope it all goes well,I can't imagine the duck blind without her at my side. smile

Make it your christmass present, or everyones present. laugh
Good dogs don't grow on trees you know.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you and your dog.

Best shore up that fence while he/she is in the hospital.
