Animal rights group plans beer campaign
PETA attempts to appeal to the 'Top 10' party schools

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals doesn't plan to ask students at Indiana University if they've "got milk" — instead it will ask if they've "got beer."
"It's a tongue-in-cheek way of getting the attention of college students about the fact that, if they're consuming dairy products, they're promoting animal abuse," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said.
The animal-rights group chose to target the 10 schools Princeton Review unscientifically ranked last month for party status. In addition to IU, they are Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Penn State, Buffalo, New Hampshire, Colorado, Florida State and Wisconsin.
Campaign officials also will visit the top five of what Princeton Review called "stone-cold sober" schools: Brigham Young, Wheaton College and the Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard academies.
It's the second time around for the "Got Beer?" anti-dairy ad campaign, which spoofs the dairy industry's long-lived "Got Milk?" spots.
PETA first used the "Got Beer?" campaign in March 2000, but canceled it after receiving criticism from Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other groups.
Friedrich said he doubts the campaign will cause college students to drink more beer than they otherwise would.
"College students aren't waiting for PETA's imprimatur to drink," he said.
