We got there after the rain and wind on Monday night. Tuesday and Wednesday were perfect,we couldn't ask for better conditions. Sunny skies,flat water and lots of fish...what a blast! Today was just the opposite,windy rough and rainy...yuck! Four of us went and we caught and released 82 wild fish and smaller hatchery fish. We kept 9 fish that averaged 8lbs. The biggest of the trip was just under 14lbs.

Tuesday the fish averaged about 6lbs,Wednesday the average was about 8lbs. I think all the rain prior to our arrival brought in bigger fish. Herring was the bait of choice,but everything we tried worked to a degree. The morning bite was waaaaaay better than the afternoon bite.

I can't wait for next week...we're going back next for a couple days.

Sounds like a great trip!!! Me and the Mrs. are headin' out this weekend. I've never fished there, but I've fished Pillar Point alot (years ago). Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Thanks for the report. I will be there this weekend. My first trip as well. Question? Any thoughts on where I should head for some bottom fish when I'm there. Thanks.

My suggestion...leaving port, head north towards Vanc. Island for about 1/2- 1 mile. Start trolling straight towards Vanc. Island, using divers, dodgers and plug cut herring, or 4 oz. of lead and plug cut. Put 'em out anywhere from 15-25 pulls and keep trolling towards the island till you hit a school.Once you get in a school, work that area for a bit and then head north some more till you find another one. Very simple. Good luck...wished I was going to be there.

During F6 FishmasterDan and I headed into area 4 for bottom fish. I got a couple of Rockfish. Dan caught about 10 Kelp Cod and hooked something that didn't even slow down.

Don't bring any coho up there. And don't stop to fish coho on the way in if you exceed area 5 limits.

We fished the kelp with 1 oz pink wiggly rubber worm things.( I borrowed some from Jeffhead and he was gone before I could give em back) Picked up a couple of 3/8 jig heads at Swains on the way out. They have some wiggly worm things for $.19 each.

The closest we fished to shore was 2 miles. Our most consistent action was at least 3 miles and up to 6 miles out. When we were there the tide was running west in the A.M. and east in the P.M. In the morning we ran N.W. from Olson's out 5 1/2 miles to 5-600 ft. of water. In the afternoon we ran straight out of Olson's 2 1/2-3 miles and fished the same depth.

Right after first light we trolled 1/2-3 oz. of lead and a herring right on top,about 25 pulls out. After about 9 A.M we had to run deep 6's and a flasher with either herring or a hootchie with a strip of herring. With the deep 6's we ran 7-10 passes on a penn 109 to get the right depth.

The fish are probably averaging 6-8lbs,with a few fish each day being weighed over 12lbs. I called Olson's before we got there and they said the fish were averaging 12-14 lbs...yea right! While we were there I saw 4 fish over 12lbs brought to Olson's. The fish are getting bigger every day,but don't expect the fish to be real big for a week or so.

P.S. if you don't hook a fish in 10-15 minutes,pick up and run somewhere else,don't waste all day trolling around if you aren't hooking fish.
