I have just taken my 2001 Mercury 225hp Optimax back to the shop after yet another plug fouling failure. When it is running correctly it is a super motor for performance and economy but Mercury seems to have an engineering problem on their hands since they recalled this motor last year and still can't seem to figure out how to fix it. Anyone else had a similar experience.

I haven't (heard about problems before I bought my new motor) but have known those who have had problems. No fun!

I have the 200 merc carborated model year 2001. It is the toughest starting motor I have ever had. either it starts first thing or just might as well have a beer and wait cause cranking it over aint going to start it. Less than 50 hours on it. the other thing is it has a dead spot in the rpm range and you get about 1/3 rd throttled up and it starves out of gas. I am going to take mine in as soon the good salmon fishin in the sound is over and have them check it out again. what is the recall about.

Read a short clip in powerboat reports addressing the problem and the recall by merc. It also stated that it was a problem only on the 225hp models. My 150 has performed flawlessly to date.
