I was wondering when is a good time to head to Hood canal to get some realtively bright Chum? I was looking at past posts and the time seems to maybe start about now but not sure.

Also, there was some mention of suspending a cherise jig with maybe some shrimp oil on it. Will this work in the Canal or just in the rivers?
What is the best bet in the canal.

I would like to get some before the all head down to the hatchery and have spawn colors on them too much.

Thanks

Goose....I have seen your posts the most on this. Can you help me out? Send me an e-mail.

Thanks.

There are bright chum in the upper Canal now, but the area is closed until the 16th for retention. And don't ask me how to catch bright chum in the salt-- that's a question I asked about a week ago. Got some good answers, but I haven't put them to the test yet. I hope to do so Friday, weather permitting.

Probably the best bet will be small herring either trolled slowly through the schools or suspended under a float. However, I'm going to be trying the other methods as well as some I've thought about. If I do anything besides watch seagulls, I'll post my results.

Good luck,

Keith

Busy,
Just a guess, but I don't think there is a big body of knowledge out there for nailing the chums in the salt. However, like you've heard, there are several techniques out there that apparently work (which I have not had an opportunity to try). I can confirm the cerise jig under a float works great in the rivers. Another technique I've read about is to troll a small plug herring right on the surface very very slowing and a long distance behind the boat. Like youself, I hope try both of these techniques out plus try the herring under a float approach in the next couple of weeks.

Tom Nelson is giving a seminar tonight at 7:00 in Gig Harbor at the PSA meeting. The topic, "Catching Chum Salmon in Saltwater".

Check out Salmon University for the details.

Seacat, are you going? I have to work tonight till 7pm in Bellevue so will not be able to make it over. frown

Sounds like a very worthwhile class. Do you know if they will be having others or have some information that they will put on line? I have not seen any on the website.

Thanks.
