i recently picked up the okuma epixor ef40 and so far i like it a lot i am using maxima ultragreen 15 lb on it with no problems at all the first time i used it i caught a chum about 15lbs and it had a bad attitude but the reel worked great nice smooth drag system and 10 bearings the reel is not sloppy at all.i paid $64.99 for it at jerrys surplus in everett but i saw that sportco has them a little cheaper but not really worth the drive for me.i think if you tried 1 you would like it to so far its the best spinning reel i have owned.the shimanos i have had were good reels to but i always had the ones with the quickfire feature and they are to sloppy for drift fishing, good luck Bruce laugh

I like Daiwa reals. Get one with a few ball bearings if fishin fresh water but if yer fishin the salt I would not get one w/a lot of ball bearings.

Any supple, limp line works well on spinning reels, yer right, max is too stiff.

Trilene, silver thread, stren are all lines that I have had god luck with.

I usually go for the smallest diameter line that I can get away with.

If fishin deep and \or jigging I like the new small diameter high strength lines -- the sensitivity can't be beat. Be sure to use a mono leader tho cuz of the nearly zero stretch.

Good luck and tight lines

Sincerely,
Roger

I bought a few Okuma f20's last year.. initially they were awesome.. and they are a good reel.. but I would rather fish a shimano stradic 2000. check out ebay you can get them new for $100.

The stradic 2000 are much lighter.. and seem to have a much better drag and are very smooth.

Check out the Shimano Spheros' 3000.

I love this reel, I have a Metaloid (Okuma) and Like the Shimano much better.

The Okumas are good too, but If you have 100 in the budget, don't overlook the Speros'

I got mine at Teds, it was under 100, 89 I think.

Either one is good, but after using both, the Shimano is my favorite. The 3000 is great right in between the old 2000 and 4000 perfect size IMO.

I vote for the Stradic also. I have both the 2000 and 4000. Very smooth and trustworthy drag system.

Stradic is my choice. They are on sale at (close your eyes I can't believe I said it) Bass Pro shop for under $100. Just got a flyer in the mail. smile

My vote is for the Diawa Laguna 2500 . 7 ball bearings , super smooth . No bells or whistles but that's what will make this one long lasting . Large spool so it will hold 150 yds of 10# . Plus the spare spool is metal not the cheap graphite ones .

Spooled with Izor or Stren Magnaflex and it's an awesome combo for $69.99 hello

I also vote for the Shimano Stradic. They have a new model that will be available around mid-Dec., a 2500 series that will hold a little more line than the 2000.

Just got a Okuma Metaloid from Cabela's last week. I havent used it yet but it sure feels nice. Only draw back that I can see is it may be to pretty to fish with rolleyes

I use Shimano Symetre ($85) like my guide friends do, but the Stradic ($100+) is great too.
As far as line goes, I use Suffix in yellow from E-Angler.com. You get 1/4 pound spool for less than $10. Breaking strength and abrasion resistance equal to Maxima ug but handles better. Also comes in clear and (I thnk) green. I use #8 and #10 on the Symetre 2000 but you can go up to #15 on the 4000 model. Another good line is Maxima Perfexion, but I do alot of line watching and side drifting so I like the yellow colors.

Why spend so much? I have a Shimano Sahara that I've had for about a year. It's probably caught 2 dozen fish already, and is going strong. I think I paid about $55 for it at G.I. Joes. Nice drag, smooth action, seems to be pretty durable.
