Gang,

I am planning on fishing the Dicovery Bay Salmon Derby over the President's Day weekend. However, wife wants to head up there too, but doesn't want to fish. So, I am faced with this question... If I drag a couple horses up there, are there any specific riding trails she and my daughter can ride close by? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Downriggin'

Y'know, DR, my wife is an avid rider also - most of the time my truck is pretty much welded to the horse trailer, so I'm limted to a small aluminum boat that can be launched with the minivan if I'm to do much fishing rolleyes But I bet if she had someone to ride with I might be able to talk her into that derby too! They let you fish Midchannel in that one or is it just for Area 6? Anyway, I'll talk to you about that at the Narrows derby tomorrow.

By the way, my hand-held radio has only 22 channels so I can't get on 68, could you guys monitor channel 22 occasionally? Thanks beer

As I recall from memory, in the past the derby boundaries don't allow any fishing north of Protection Island or east of McCurdy Pt. I can't say for sure what the boundaries are this year, haven't seen anything. I think that it is really intended to be the "Discovery Bay" derby and not the Area 6 derby. Even Dallas Bank is outside of the zone, not to mention Hein Bank and others nearby. Diamond Pt. has kicked out several derby winners fwiw.

The areas to fish outside of the bay itself are relatively small and you'll have lot's of company wherever you fish. Bring foul weather gear and patience for this one. The weather usually really sucks and the fishing is generally kind of tough, but can be good at times. The last time I fished that derby I had a 1/4" of ice on my boat one morning...BURRRRR!!!!

Here's a tip from a past winner of that derby (NOT ME btw!)... Troll deep, troll slow young man. Think Kings. wink
