right now id vote for feingold or mccain and thats it....
the dems arent as likely to give the nomination to hilary as many think....she is a red herring to get the finances that pay for political attacks to waste their money on the wrong person but many of us dems will fight tooth and nail to make sure that she doesnt get the nomination. i and most dems that i know are committed to progress within the party and not allowing the party to regress to its wishy washy-ness that caused us two major failures.......

The choice is actually much simpler than you present Slab... 'specially since 2/3 of the folks on your list ain't even gonna run. Look for dark horse ex Virginia Governor Mark Warner to make a strong showing for the dems. Hillary? There are just too many folks that don't like her and will not vote for her no matter what the reason. I like McCain... but he's gettin' pretty old. Guliani ain't conservative enough for the fundamentalist Kool-Aid drinkers to get behind him, IMO. Just think, if Karl Rove had been injured in a hunting accident by Dick Cheney in early 2000, McCain would have gotten the GOP nod, beat Al Gore in a close election, and spared us from all of the misery of the last 5 years. Ahhh, what might have been...

McCain has a lot of support among Democrats and Independents. For some reason he is regarded as a moderate. Not true. He is a right wing conservative and a hawk on the middle east.
SlabQuest, did you pull that list of possible candidates out of your ass? Aside from McCain I'd have to go with "none of the above".

Who say's King George won't "interpret" the constitution again and try to stay in office? After all it say's "elected" and he was appointed not elected in 2000.
"The Twenty-second Amendment of the United States Constitution sets a term limit for the President of the United States, providing that "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once." Prior to the adoption of the amendment, the constitution set no limit on the number of presidential terms. The United States Congress proposed the amendment on March 21, 1947. It was ratified by the requisite number of states on February 27, 1951."
If McCain runs again he will most likely win otherwise I think the voters have had it with the Rep party for a while. I'm still not convinced the Dem's didn't win the presidency both times anyway.

McCain is too old and too much of a Bush whore so forget him! He compromised his ethics by kissing W's a$$ too much. For the GOP look for Sen.George Allen to make a run or maybe Sen.Rick Santorum, both right wing tools and after 8 years of fascism I think Americans have had enough. I like Feingold, Warner and Richardson for the dems. I think Hillary is too polarizing but would pick her over anything the GOP had to offer

i worked on the tom harkin campaign a bit way back in 91' and i still think he would be a good candidate.... other than tom harkin(almost no way he would even run again), i wanna see dark horses from both sides and no more re-heated leftovers......
but at this point, we almost need jesus himself, or someone else that can walk on water and then turn it into wine, to come back and fix this mess......or some sort of very patient, non-violent,period of protest and reform.. where we basically get rid of the entire congress and executive branch , disband both parties and start over by re-filling congress with all new faces in order to pull the weeds out by the roots

How about a McCain/Rice ticket......it covers a lot of bases.
Sorry Dave, I was on the Edwards bandwagon briefly, but his message is getting a little redundant with a southern lawyer overtone.......a v.p. yes, a president, no thanks.
But seriously, isn't about time for a real leader? The list above so far doesn't make me feel all warm and secure.

Unlike SS's personal remark, my insult was to the entire Democratic Party. Surely you can see the difference.
Not really. It's a personal insult to any Democrat here. If you insult the party, you're personally insulting every member of that party. At most it's a subtle difference. Surely not the way to start a thread you expect will be void of personal attacks......not that personal attacks bother me all that much. JMHO, worth approximately what was paid for it.

I hope for balance so debate can be part of our governmental process. There is no debate when one party controls 2 of 3 (arguably all three) branches of government.
"If there was any chance that this transaction would jeopardize the security of the United States, it would not go forward"
Nothing like a heartfelt Bush justification for ANOTHER dumbassed decision.

Rove thinks Bush is a good person? I doubt that's ever been a factor for Rove one way or another. It's all about power with Rove. Rove was successfully practicing the politics of deceit and smear when he was a Young Republican. He expressed the ambition to be the power behind the throne of a president long before he met Bush.
Bush's role in his relationship with Rove has been essentially passive. Bush didn't decide to go into politics and hire Rove to manage his campaigns. It was the other way around. Rove met Bush, decided Bush would be a manageable vehicle for his ambitions, and persuaded Bush to go into politics.
Speaking of Bush's passivity, I suppose everybody has heard how Cheney came to be V.P.? When Bush 2 was running for prez, Bush 1 sent Cheney to "help" Bush 2 select a VP candidate. After taking Bush's measure, Cheney selected himself.

OF the thread originating butt nuggets list I will pick Guilani. Of course it would be nice to write in Ollie North, Norman Schwartzkopf or Tommy Franks. If we must live in a belligerent world it's best to have a shooter in charge.

Actually Bush and Rove were selected by the very wealthiest. His coffers were the largest of all time. And he's been paying back with our dough ever since.
Colin Powell used up his credibility. One could say standing behind this admin was patriotic but a true soldier has a duty to expose treason.

Sard,
Please pull Ollie from your list; he's a criminal. Generals have not generally been particularly effective presidents, so I'll disagree on the advisability of having a "shooter" in charge. The jobs are fundamentally different, I think, and that is probably why generals haven't been among the better presidents.
I liked Colin Powell, another general, but he wasted his credibility when he acted as a pawn for Bush. Too bad, as he had the potential to be a premier cabinet member of any administration.
KK,
I also appreciate principled individuals as candidates, but it seems that such a person is no longer electible. Maybe Bush is the catalyst to change that? One can hope.
Sincerely,
Salmo g.

What would the platform be for any candidate in '08? Fighting Terrorism? (now being called the long war)Every candidate will be for this one. Fixing our budget mess? Medicare, medicaid and social security are heading us into financial ruin as the Baby Boomers begin to retire. No one will want to touch this one. It requires cutting entitlements and raising taxes. Strengthening our economy? How, by shipping more jobs to China? Fix the problems that GW made? No republican would admit he made any and there isn't enough time for anybody to fix them all. Anybody have any ideas?

Bill Clinton? You must be talking about some other Clinton, not about the Bill Clinton who was Prez during the good old days of balanced budgets, respect for the Constitution and unthreatened personal liberties, when our country was loved and respected all over the world.

Maybe one of the Bush twins will run and magically win by a nose. They'll chalk it up to a last minute endorsement from Paris hilton.

Salmosalar, That's a good post!
I can see how the Dem's running a governor would be the way to go!
Don't know about Edwards. That fixed smile got a little old in the last election.

i agree -running a governor is the way to go for either side... senators only know how to spend while governors have to run administrations and budgets.....

Hopefully the governor candidate would be from a state where the office has real duties. In Texas the governor is just a ceremonial position. As far as duties and power goes, Lieutenant Governor actually a more important office in Texas! That might explain in part why Bush was so comfortable turning over his presidential duties to Cheney.
