Sorry to be a 'wet blanket' for you Washingtonians: but the Lower/Middle Rogue is ALIVE with the buggers. And my wife-type says I've got to continue empting moving boxes. ... Ah well, it will be a couple of weeks at least before they hit the top 30ísh miles of river (Medford to the Hatchery). On the 'top end' of the Rogue our 'winter run' fishing really only kicks into gear in LATE January-March. The good news is the past several years (nothing suggesting a change for 2002-2003) the runs have been very large. Even us 'fly guys' have been hitting fish, after fish, after fish. Just have to run the flys deep and slow to get results.

I will bet you your rod that if you just go out to your favorite spot to fish whether it be a river, lake, or pugect sound and concentrate on having a good time fishing for pure enjoyment ,you are more likely to catch fish instead of going out fishing for a pure meat pay out. Another way to look at the situation is if you get a recomendation on here about a hot fishery you are going to be fishing with a lot of guys and all of their brothers and will be very likely to have a fun filled day of tangles, tension, and spooked fish. It seems to me fisherman have lost the sparkle an magic a salmon or steelhead can provide. I don't want to label you as a card filler interest man only but its hard not too when you look so bleakly on the present fishery status. If you just want to catch your self fish hire a guide and go do a lot of catching. If you want to really fish go spend the day with a friend or by your self and be stoked on possibly seeing a fish in a tailout or even the possibility of having one on. Lastly please don't kill any Native fish.
