Here's the deal... I'm selling my Loomis str 1143c GL3. I orginially had a 1082c GL3, sold it, and bought the 1143. Well, I've decided after purchasing another model that handles what I orginially bought the 1143 for better, I no longer need it. Now I've decided I want the 1082c again, this time in IMX. I currently have the 1082 IMX spinning (used mainly for free drifting during higher flows; 1141s during lower flows), and felt I would rather have the IMX this time around in the casting model instead of the GL3. But....

Last fall a friend of mine built me a Rainshadow 1141 (43 million modulus). While I personally think IMX is still slightly better, the Rainshadow's are excellent blanks (better than GL3, IMO), especially for the price and customer service. So, instead of getting the Loomis 1082c IMX, I'd have another Rainshadow built.

Well, turns out Rainshadow doesn't build a 1082. 1024, 1084, but no 1082. Really bizzare if you ask me, considering it's popularity as a great summer-run rod. My buddy who built me the 1141, said when he worked at Loomis (long time ago) the 1082 was nothing but a 9 foot, 9 wt. fly rod wrapped into either a casting/spinning rod. So...

He gave me the idea to build the 9 wt fly blank, into a casting rod. But instead of the 43 million modulus, the new 51 mill. modulus which rainshadow only offers in fly rods, and bass rods (no steel/salmon blanks yet).

Those of you currently building Rainshadow customs (TH???), what's your take on this scenario? I always thought the tips on fly blanks are heavier than blanks that are truly designed for steelhead rods??? I've been told that Loomis long ago used to take the 10 wt fly blanks, split em up and make fly rods with one half, and 1141's with the other. Then they eventually designed a true 1141 mandrel that produced a slightly better rod when compared to using the 10 wt.

If it'll fly, I'd like to really try one of these new high modulus Rainshadow's wrapped into a true steelhead rod. But, if it's going to be quite a difference, I'd rather stick to the IMX. Before I sell my 1143, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

James laugh

James,
Can't help you out with the Rainshadow questions, but i do have a 1082c imx in very good to ex condition i'd be willing to trade for that 1082s imx if your willing to part with it, especially if it is has the older single foot guides and original ken wiebe alum. reel seat collar made esp. for loomis (pre shimano mods) either or doesn't matter.. and also have a 1084c imx (also pre-shimano) barely used. I could also use another 1143 for a downrigger rod... what would you need for it?

If anyone's interested in these rods shoot some me some mail:)

Mavrick,

Sorry man, I cannot part ways with the 1082s, but yes it's a pre-Shimano with the pac-bay guides and I believe it has the reel-seat your talking about. I already have the 1084. But, if your willing to trade the 1082c IMX for the 1143c GL3, plus I'll pay the difference between the two (I believe it's $55; $360 for the IMX 1082c, $305 for the GL3 1143c), I'd be interested for sure laugh . My 1143 is 2 1/2 years old, but it's in excellent shape. I should mention though, it has Fuji reel-seat/guides. The 1143 is a great rod, I just don't use it much anymore.

Perfect Drift - comparing one manufacturers rod to another is kind of tough. I wish Rainshadow offered a 1082 but they dont. When I look at the specs on the Rainshadow 1081 I see the weight rating is 4-8 lbs and the next weight up is a 1084 and it is an 8-12 lb rod. The Loomis 1082 rod you are interested in is a 6-10 lb rod. So their is definately a gap between the 2 9 ft Rainshadow rods mentioned.

Trying to get a fly rod to fit into this gap is not my expertise. I looked at the physical sizes of the blanks on Rainshadow rods and found the following.

Rainshadow Salmon steelhead rods
IST1081 butt .440 tip 4.5
IST1084 butt .515 tip 5.0

9 wt fly rods
RXF909 (51 mil mod) butt .435 tip 5.5
IF909 (43 mil mod) butt .420 tip 4.5

The butts on the fly rods are a little smaller in diameter, and a little bigger or the same in the tip diameters

I dont have access to the physical sizes of the Gloomis rods to compare.

I dont know how a fly rod would compare up. I have built very few fly rods. The few I have handled seemed to bend in a different arc than a salmon/steelhead rod.

What I do not understand is how come they have the 51 mills available in fly rods but not Steelhead rods beathead

That's what I was thinking Bait O' Eggs, smaller butt w/heavier tip when comparing the fly blanks to the cast/spin blanks, which would also effect the action (load), as you mentioned. But I'm no expert when it comes to building rods, so that's why I thought I'd ask. laugh

Does anyone really know why Rainshadow isn't building the 1082?

BTW Mavrick, what's your email address???

Thanks,

James laugh

That's funny Mavrick, but no I can't do it. When it comes to casting rods, I actually like the Fuji guides better, but when it comes to the spin rods, nahhh, pac-bay all the way! Guess we both agree on that, eh??

I figured if you'd like another 1143 for a downrigger rod, plus make 55 bucks, you might be interested. No problem though, hope you find a good pre-shimano to trade for!!

I am working ith Rainshadow now in developing the 1082. They are working on getting the RX7 line out in both gloss green and matte clear, as soon as that is done they will focus on the 51 ml's and then have some time to start expanding their lines.

That's good news TH!!! But chances are, I'm not going to wait that long, so what do you think of the 9 wt fly blank conversion. Close enough to the 1082??? Or way off??

Thanks

James,

I was hoping that Bob Batson might notice this thread and advise you. Perhaps you should email him for his opinion.

Here's a chart showing a few 9 foot blanks and their specs.

It would seem that a 1082 would be heavier than a 9 wt but lighter than a 10 wt.

You will notice that in the 43 million modulus the 1081 is a bit stouter than the 9 wt fly blank and the 1084 is a bit stouter than the 10 wt while the 1085 and 12 wt are identical.

You may also note that the 51 million modulus rods are less tapered than the 43 million modulus to provide similar character.

Good luck with whatever blank you build.

Thanks Plunker.. Who's Bob Batson?

After thinking about what I orginally posted about what my friend told me with Loomis and the 1141 way-back-when, I'm assuming I misheard the "10 wt" part for "10 foot 8 wt." or something along those lines. Doesn't make sense that an ultra-light spin rod came orginally from a 10 wt. since a 10 is heavier than a 9 wt., especially with the graph you provided. Again, much appreciated Plunker.

Bob Batson is the rainshadow guy.

I dont know much about anything, but it looks to me from the smaller butt diameters and bigger tips, the flyrods should have a much slower action that the 1081 and 1084.

Man, i gotta get me a 1084 when the 51 mill mod's come out, that should be about the best steelie rod in the world.

As TH had mentioned, we are running some IST1082F through our system in the RX7 material. I really do not suggest using fly rod blanks for spin or cast rods. In years past, that is what builders were using, but manufacturers came out with more desireable choices like the 1081F, 1082F, 1141F, 1143F, 1201F, etc.. Some of these are run on the fly rod mandrels, but with a reinforcement in the butt section for the spin and cast applications.
We also are adding another color offering to the RX7 series. To date, we offered this series in matte clear only. We are in the process of coating this same series in dark transparent green gloss. We will offer both colors.
As soon as the new color is in inventory, we will add "ST" models in the RX8 material. The colors available for this new RX8 series will be the matte clear, as well as transparent black gloss. This could take a month, or even two.
We do monitor most of the boards around the country so that we can get a feel of what builders and users are in need of. If we feel there is enough of a call, then we will produce, and add to the product line.
Hope this answers some of the questions.
