I got two questions! One, why the heck is my avitar image coming out so BIG....besides the fact that the fish is so BIG. smile

Two, I got a new yam 8HP hi thrust four stroke and I'm looking for a good mount for it. The best I've seen so far is an OMC model they sell at Bayside Marine in Everett. ($495 bucks ouch!) I've been told the Garlick style mounts don't hold up too well with the high thrust 4strokes. What ya think?

Big fish, big pic. Big kicker, big bracket wink
I also have the H.T yami 8 and went through the same thing. I spent the money for the omc bracket and have been VERY happy I did. Price shop around some. I did find that the prices ranged. Good luck and have fun with your new toy. laugh

I went with the OMC for my 8hp honda. The person that owned the boat before me had problems with the bracket (he was using a 15 hp 4 stroke for a kicker on a bracket rated for 80 lbs, the bracket couldn't take the weight and he almost lost his kicker.) When I bought the boat I took it down and had an omc installed. The thing is a stout as brick
sh*& house beathead . I think it is worth the money if for nothing else that the peace of mind.

PS I could have installed the new bracket myself but I wanted the shop to take an extra close look at the transom and make sure there was no damage when the other bracket broke.

Sounds like OMC is the way to go, thanks for the advice. Where did you guys get yours, I just called Auburn Sports and they wanted $495 also.

Still working on reducing the avitar pic size, I'm proud of the fish but not that much!

I have the same motor, fourstroke Yami, and at first had it on an OMC bracket. The bracket was for the smaller 15 hp two strokes, etc. After seeing cracks develop and then the piston fail, I too looked hard at the heavy duty model, but 500 bucks was too much for me. I went to Boaters World and bought the Garelick heavy duty model rated for up to 30 hp. web page I have had it for a year in heavy seas, and it has held up well. The outboard also raises and lowers very nicely.
Save some money and buy one of these, ask for an opinion from fellow boarder "AKKings", I think he works there.

Crabin:

I found a few things through C-ME Marine (on the internet) for my rig. They do not have the OMC bracket so often mentioned above, but they do carry the Garelick - 4 stroke bracket (go to www.c-mesales.com, then "engine room" on the menu to the left). I would suggest searching on the internet for some good deals, unless you are prone to supporting your local shops (including tax).

I do not have the OMC bracket for my rig, but have seen them, and as long as your transom is in good structural order, and the bracket is mounted well, you can't go wrong. THey are one of the strongest brackets out there, short of welding on a rigid bracket.

The questions are: How much risk are you willing to take with a brand new motor? What level of insurance are you willing to pay for?

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Cheers,
Matt

The OMC bracket works and will handle the Yamaha four strokes. Personally, I got tired years ago of hanging over the back of my boat and lifting those hydralic brackets. I have a 9.9 Yamaha and it was heavy. I invested in a electric hydralic lift from Islands Marine Center eight years ago and have done nothing but flip a switch to lift my outboard since then. It works great and I've never had one problem and it gets heavy use every year. They are pricey. At last check I think around $1,000 for the bracket and motor but you will never regret it if you have low back problems.

I have a 9.9 merc 4 stroke (111 pounds) with an OMC bracket that works well. I have had a hard time finding a replacement piston, the 125 pound piston, any help where I might find one? It is still working good but I think the piston is getting a little weak. 3 years old. Take care all

Does your yami have power T/T? I just bought with power T/T, so I just Had an aluminum bracket welded to my specs for $150. Works like a champ.

Crabbin Fever, Let me start by saying welcome aboard and nice fish.

As for kicker brackets, let me start by saying I have used and abused 3-4 different brands of brackets and when I say abused, I mean 100 days in a row on the ocean, in seas upto 6 or 8 feet and often times, backing down into waves and swell, not the typical type use most guys are going to put a bracket through but it definitely showed me who makes a quality product, that being said, I wouldn't buy anything but an OMC, especially if I plan on keeping the boat for a few years.

FishNg1, hey I just got done reading another book (Working on the edge) that mentioned your brother, this is the second book I've read that mentions him. Your family should be very proud of him he is a true American hero that will probably never get the credit he's due. I would love to buy him a drink or 3 and listen to some of his stories. You happen to know other books he's been mentioned in, I would like to check them out, thanks.

Akkings, we are very proud of him, and feel a little more at ease that he finally retired from the Coast Guard. He is still currently living in Kodiak with his family, he also has a home in Sitka, but they just seem to love the Island of Kodiak. I must visit him again before he decides to leave, but then again, Sitka would also be a nice place to visit. He has retired from the CG, but took on a job at the base hospital, just can't stop and spend all his time fishing.
I will ask him if there are any other books or articles featuring him and his fellow helicopter pilots. I did a search on the web just using his name the other day and found several articles with him being mentioned.
Thanks, Steve Ng

Drifter,

I did get the extra long shaft (25inch) with power tilt so I’m not concerned with raising and lowering the motor that much. Like you I was considering building a solid mount, but I was wondering if the motor in the tilted up position would handle the pounding in rough water.

In my opinion, yes. The transom is the calmest place to ride. They also come with a three year warranty.

Just one thing for us to consider is make sure you mount a stainless eyebolt on these mounts, that way you can chain your German shepard or Rottweiler to the motor. I park mine near the kennel and am glad that the neighbors don't mind the barking at night. Most of the times just a raccoon, but I always look out the bedroom window just in case.
Had a friend who was ripped off about two monthes ago, and he and I went to Radio shack and they have these inexpensive devices that sound off when beams or trip wires are set.
Thieves beware!
