watched a fellow yesterday hook a fish using a double barbless hook and sandshrimp under a float he landed the fish quickly went to release it found the hooks were buried deep and cut his leader released the fish it swam off upstream strongly only to be seen floating back into the pool on its side a minute later i didnt see that he could of handled the situation any different than he did other than not using bait any suggestions by the way not that it would of changed things the fish was fin clipped

Was one of the hooks in the tongue? Just curious.

lead thrower he didnt say exactly where it was hooked other than it had inhaled it and it was hooked very deep i was 50-75ft away from him. just trying to figure out if theres anything else that could of been done

Not having been there, the only things I might have suggested would be to revive the fish longer( I know you mentioned it was landed quickly) and if possible cut the leader between the tandem hooks. Also, if he knew it was hooked that deep maybe not netting it would have helped? Being fin clipped and hooked deep sounds like a date with the bbq to me.

try using 1 single hook.... holds just as good as 2 trebles and does a lot less damage.

If there is bleeding involved working to revive the fish is the wrong thing to be doing! The blood of fish will clot fairly quickly but for the that to occur the heart rate has to slow down.

Think about it - seems unlikel that a fish heart beat will slow while we are working with it. The fish has no idea what we are up to. For those fish there best chance is to cut the leader as quickly as possible without attempting to remove the hook. Attempting to remove the hook will likely increase the size of the wound. Once the leader is cut release the fish quickly and if possible in quiet water (under a log/rock) so that the fish has a chance to calm down. If it has to contonue to work hard it will bleed out very quickly.

A side note - if you find that upon releasing a fish it needs reviving your fishing playing skills are unnecessarily stressing the fish.

RA3, I did not see anything about trebles. It sounded like he was talking about two single hooks.

I hate to say it, but sooner or later, even the most consciencious fisherman will kill a native. Makes me sick when it happens, but it still happens. I suppose using bait this time of year may be unnecessary and result in this scenario more often than artificials.
