I need a rod to do a little Halibut fishing. I don't want to spend a fortune, cause I'll only use it a couple times per year. I'll mainly fish Sekiu or Freshwater bay. Both places don't require really deep fishing,so I've heard.

I think the Ugly Stik's are gonna be a pretty good rod for my needs, but which one? What length and action? I don't have a clue about Halibut rods.
thanks.

John from halibut.net has some cheap hali rods for $25. He lives in Monroe and we've trying to meet up for a swap. Just send him an email and he'll fix you up. jbeath@verizon.net

HBP.
I picked up a couple Ugle Sticks myself, BWC/AO 2202 7' Medium/Heavy action. I think it should do the job, at least that's what the salesman said (he wouldn't lie - right? right??). laugh

In emergency situation:

If you have a heavy salmon rod, use the lower half. We didn't have enough rods one time and tried it and it worked fine.

I would think that either of the following Ugly Stiks would work. I have the 2201's for oversized Sturgeon. USBWC 2201 1 piece 7 ft. Medium Action rated for 20/50 lb. Or the USBWC 2202 1 piece 7 ft. Heavy Action rated for 30/60 lb.

If you decide the rod your using isn't stiff enough skip the end guide, I've done this in a pinch and it works .

I use a Shimono tuna rod and love it, has plenty of backbone and still has the flexability to play the fish, works great for sturgeon also.
