When fishing rivers for steelhead I have found that even when you have perfect water conditions that if it is sunny out that the success rate goes way down.example I have caught 14 fish in the last 2 weeks all on corky and eggs, water had good color and it was at least over cast if not raining.I have tried switching colors changing sizes of both corky and bait size but it just dosen't seem to mater they just don't bite,I guess what I am looking for is do you find this to be true if so what have you changed to make it work.

If you can see the fish they can probably see you and in clear water they see the line and every thing else. They get kind of spooky and it is tougher to catch them especially when there is too much fishing pressure. You need to be very careful about what you are doing. I don't like clear water myself. As far as color I guess it depends on the river and I don't think there is a universal color.

Let me know via private message where you caught all your fish and I may be able to assist you further laugh eek smile

Just realized that you were talking about sunny and not clear condition. I think under sunny condition they may feel more exposed as well because of the light. I personally like dark(er) days if the water is somewhat clear or dark(er) water if it is sunny.
My offer still stands rolleyes

The other day I saw the steelie and I think she saw me by the way she intially reacted to my presence! But ...with a delicate presentation on the fly in gin clear water I was able to convince the fat sow to take the fly -not even 15ft in front of me! I watched her come up slightly and nail the son-of-a-gun! I could even see her white gums... I was impressed, really didn't expect that!!
Good Fishing, Darin

Metalic colors seem to work best on sunny days. Chrome with bright red or chartruse. Some of my better days have started foggy then quickly turend sunny. there is a great bite as the sun comes out.
Also check the quality of your bait. They seem to like the best stuff on the sunny days, while marginal bait will often work when its overcast.
