I know many have posted on fishing the Hoh for steelhead but I would like some specifics on the fishing.

What are the best methods(i.e. plugs, jigs colors of each and with or without floats) of fishing from the bank besides flyfishing(I am still learning how to cast right).

Also what conditions should I look for.

I also will primarilary do catch and release except for maybe a couple fish a year to bring home to eat.

Any info would be great. If you would like to email me you can at sportsnut@cablespeed.com

Thanks Robert

Hey PT ... No offense, but I think you're looking at things the wrong way.

Steelhead are steelhead are stelhead ...

You fish 'em the same way as you would anywhere!

Slow presentations in soft water when dirty and vice-versa when clean.

Remember, 95% of the battle is putting your offering in front of a fish ... then maybe the other 5% is what you're using.

Match your tactics to the type of water you're fishing and learn to read where they hold ... then you can go anywhere and fish fairly well even without knowing some of the "secret" spots that every river has!

Good luck!

I've seen people cast plugs from the bank or run that side planner thing with plugs but it is kind of silly if you ask me rolleyes

People catch stuff with just about any color laugh In winter I have had good luck with pink and red.

Float or no float doesn't matter if you can get it in front of them so it depends on your specific situation.

Gurus say it fishes best about 2000 +/- 200 cfs.

Pay attention and keep at it PT, it takes time to figure them out ... the books that are out there will help you learn more about different techniques in depth and when / where to implement them.

Once you get it sort of figured out, then you can experiment a little ...

Once you get it really figured out, then you can guide some ...

Then the fish throw everything you know about them back in your face smile

PS Stihlhead ... More is better wink

Bob,
I was editing and left for a while and didn't see your first post. I didn't mean to jump in.

Do you mean the 2200 is better than 1800 or even higher than 2200?

Also the spots you showed me on Friday looked great but I left them there for you laugh I will try it again later. Thanks smile

I also would like some tips on fishing the Hoh, because I usually hit the Oxbow, but haven't quite figured out what technique to employ from the bank when the water is high and when it's low like it was last week. I like fishing with spoons(Crocs, Cleos, & Pixies) but can't figure out which colors are the ones to use. Also, I'm partial to running plugs. What colors work well and should i tie the plug directly to my mainline or should i use a 3-4' 12lb leader attached to a snap swivel with a bell or cannonball sinker as weight? Uh, is there a way to deal with the line twist associated with drifting spin-n-glos? Feeling real frustrated after an unsuccessful winter.
