Thinkin' 'bout gettin' some crab pots after licking my chops reading about the crab catching some of you guys are doing here. Where would you put your pots in A13? I fish around Anderson Isl. and Harstene, where are there some good spots, or is just about anyplace good? I have ringed crab off the docks, but never left a pot from the boat before. Or, how about Area 11 around Pt. Defiance? Looking to suppliment the slow fishing days with some crab salad!!

Thanks,

Steve In Oly

Look for large shelfs that are 70-100 feet deep. Redondo is a prime area because of the large shelf just south of the boat launch extending all the way to Browns Pt.

Steve,

You'll hard pressed to get some Dungies down South. To this day I have never seen one in my pots. However, the Reds are just as good with some fresh salmon and a nice salad!

One of the better spots for Reds will be Joemma Beach for us. About a ten minute run from Johnson's. Another spot is Cole Pt (Oro Bay) which is good when your fishing the "Honey Hole."

Good thing about Reds.. you don't need to be deep to get them 30'-40' max.

P.S. Your item in the mail this week!

I've never had much luck south of the bridge with dungies. I've pulled up rings with 30 or more dungies in Case Inlet - not a single keeper, though. Last month I crabbed Harstein and pulled up a fist full of red rocks. I think the legal dungies have been harvested commercially or poached in the western areas of 13. That's my theory, anyway.

When you try it look for fresh water outlets like creek mouths or river deltas. I've always found dungies near fresh water while reds seem to pop up anywhere. Look for a flat bottom. Also, I've always done best when there is little tidal movement. I think the crab tend to hunker down during big tide swings and tend not to feed.

I would focus on western areas of 13 - Carr Inlet or the Nisqually or Chambers Creek flats. Good luck.

Steve,

I should have read your whole post....

If you want Dungies, head over to Quartermaster Harbor. I would almost bet my boat that you'll catch a fish or two while your there!
