The Northshore chapter of TU will be planting trees for shade on a large pond today (3-8-03). The pond located off Ben Howard Rd upstream of Monroe Wa is an ideal steelhead and salmon rearing area and is need of better shade.
If you want to pitch in and help put back into the resource, join us today from 10am-2pm at Barr Creek.

Thanks Fishdoctor. Any idea who it was that planted a bunch of trees against and above the bank right above Lewis Street Bridge on the same side of the river as Ben Howard Rd.? I noticed there is a small tree farm there. It looks like they planted hemlock, red cedar and doug fir there. -It was a great idea...they ripped out all the blackberry bushes!

I dont know for sure about that one Darin, it could be the stilly \snohomish enhancement group, or the land owner is looking to the future.

Our group put in about 200 cottonwood and alder today, it was cold out there, but we stayed dry most of the day and got the jop done. We have beavers nearby so we needed to use these pro-glow tubes to protect the trees until they are established. This area is in need of shade, thus the trees. It is a great area for fish to use for rearing, we have a good supply of wild fish using the system. Its fun to spend a day working to help our wild steelhead and salmon.

Yes! Good Job, Doc!!

I have planted over 300 trees of various species (spruce, hemlock, fir, cedar, vine maple, cottonwood, alder, maple, and willow) along the 1000 ft or so of creek front where I live. It used to be pasture and was barren except for grasses and blackberries. Now there are still some blackberries which grow too close to the creek bank for me to disturb, but I'm hoping the shading from the planted trees will shade them out. My project has been a slowly evolving restoration over the past six or seven years. I have bought some trees, and transplanted others....a few more each year. Not bragging, but I am kind of proud of the changes. BTW, I checked again last Thursday to see if any of the steelhead had yet returned to the stream.....still zero.....very sad.

Fun5,

You don't happen to live on Salmon Creek in Discovery Bay do you? Good efforts on the creek by the way!

Fishhooker,

You made us proud!
