Hi folks,

My brother is coming in from Missouri over Memorial Day and I'm looking to take him out to the peninsula for a weekend camping/hiking/fishing excursion. I want to spend a full day fishing as I've heard nothing but great stories about the Oly Pen rivers. However, I don't have any experience fishing the peninsula. PLEASE educate me!

We're looking for excellent rainbow and brown trout or some lunker salmon. Whatever fits best with the middle of May.

Please include as much info as possible i.e. rivers, equipment, holes etc... I want to show him a most excellent time while in our gorgeous state!

Thanks to all who respond!!

Actually, maybe I should just be posting this to Bob. I'm up for doing a guided trip...just need to know what kind of fishing we can expect in the middle of May.

Thanks!

Well, your options are going to be limited as most streams will be under springtime closures.

The 'Duc will be an option for spring chinook ... it's not a high action fishery, especially if not familiar with it ... but it'll likley be one of your only options. I'd highly recommend getting a guide for it ... I'm up north then, but you can email me if interested and I'll pass along a few names of fellas you might try for it.

The Hoh may open May 15, but it may also be a June 1 opener ... you'l have to see when new regs come out. It'll also be a springer show ... another tough deal if you're not familar with it. There's still generally a few of the spring run steelies in there and perhaps an early summer or two (I know of one taken already). It's illegal to target the dollies ... so don't go there.

Stop by Olympic Sporting Goods in Forks for some suggestions on bank spots to try when you get out here and Bob can recommend some gear to match the water you'll find at that time. Have fun!

And that's a fack, Jack! Amen.

Now I gotta go strap on the drool cup again. Happens everytime someone says that "S" word.

I might have some down time during the month of May. Maybe we can hook up and I can give you and your bro a tour of the place. Let me know when you are planning to be here and I'll see what the Doc says as far as my surgery recovery goes.... I'll be out of work for about a month and I'm planning on getting the surgery in the beginning of April. Let me know.. Even if I'm back to work I can still point ya in the right direction as far as places to go and fish.. You buy the beer and I'll give ya the goods.. beer

Your best bet for that time might me halibut. The season opens the middle of may, and can be hot. There are a few charters out of Neah Bay that usually get fish. Another great fish for grubbing on! Not really a great sport species though. Its kinda like a tug of war with a parked car. (at least if can feel like that after a while!)
