I'm going down in a couple weeks and am totally new to the fishery. Gonna be fishing from a boat with a couple guys, was thinking of using my 7'9" 1-6oz 12-25lb northwest special lami to do some plugging. Should I use Magnum plugs or stick to the regular size wiggle wart? Also, what other colors are worth trying? I got several mags in black/chart tail/silver flake, red bill/green scale, silver herringbone, brass, hot orange, & hot pink. Know if a K15 met. blue chart tiger will work?

How do you fish herring/smelt? Can I just use a mooching rig or do I use a bobber?

Oh yeah, almost forgot, got some size 6 Vibrax that I don't ever use unless I'm saltwater fishing. Will those things work?

If I use some spin-n-glos, should I use a backbouncing set up, plunking setup, or a drift setup? What are some proven colors/sizes?

Double or single hook? Speaking of hooks, what size do I use? is 4/0 too puny? Does color matter?

Bucktails or other flies?

If nobody has all my answers I'd really appreciate it if I could be directed to some books or magazines that might point me in the right way.

BTW, I'm not keeping any of these fish, just planning on C&R. I would have more fun that way.

Sardine wrapped K13-15's are the primary tool. These can be trolled or anchor fished off of a dropper. Try a 48" leader of 20-30 pound with a lead drop of 18-30".

Trolled herring on the same dropper rig works, too. So do cured prawns with a large Spin-n-glo.

Rockhopper, we fish by the tides. Troll on the flood and anchor in 15'-30' of water on the ebb.

Troll herring or spinners, we use a sliding lead
droper 12"-30" and 4-6 oz. cannon ball and a 5' 30# leader w/ solid tied 4/0 hooks.

Anchor fishing.... watch people around you to see what droper length is working..... most of the time a 30" droper w/ 48" leader to a T50
flatfish/K15 Kwikfish w/ fresh bait rap.....and let them eat it

And DON"T....DON"T bleed your fish on a rope tied to the boat

For starters your pole will work just fine. I'd go buy some 2-4oz cannonball sinkers and buy a handful of k15 chrome and chartruese kwikfish. I prefer running a single siwash off the back with a 4 bead chain but a lot of guys run the trebles. Buy some beads so you can thread them on your mainline above your barrel swivel. Run a 6' leader to your kwikfish tied to the duolock swivel it came with. Use a 3' weight dropper tied to a snap swivel that you hook to your mainline above your beads.

Go to any launch and head out into the river and look for a concentration of boats and do what they do.
