Man I'm gettin old...

Thursday and this morning I had to tell my band mates that I couldn't practice because I injured an oblique muscle........coughing.

One time I was showing my brother how to clean a salmon and I said 'don't do this...' and proceeded to cut a two inch gash in my finger.

hehehe.....Two seasons ago, I was fishing a favorite spot and while standing on a log, I cast a bit too far and got hung up in a bush on the opposite bank. I jerked things around and it finally popped loose, flying back across the river at me and landed in a snag between my feet. I reeled up the slack and tried to pop it loose, but to no avail, so I bent over to pluck it from the bush. As I did, the lead in my vest pockets swung outward and that was all she wrote.....over I went into the river in an Olympics-perfect somersault. I'm not sure I even got wet, I was back on my feet so fast.....looking around in a panic to see if anyone else saw me. Whew....no one did.

Aw, to be 20.....err....30.....er......40....again

Well a couple of weeks ago I was fishing a coastal river with a friend. He commented about how slippery the rocks were while wearing rubber hip boots. I'm wearing felts with studs and I say "these rocks aren't slippery at all" at that instance I roll my ankle and fall into about 4 feet of water.

That's what I call "adding insult to injury"

When i was about 12 or 13 I decided I wanted to fly fish with a open faced reel and an ultralight rod. So I began lashing the fly back and forth with the drag really loose. Back and forth stripping line from the reel like a champ. Thought it was going well but. I just happen to hook the back of my head right where the hole is in a hat. Perfect cast. I fished a little while longer with a fly stuck in my head and then decided to go back to camp to have the barb cut off and hooked removed in reverse.

Fun times as a stupid kid.

I haven't injured myself in the line of fishing but I have seen some great ones. When I was going to school in Northern California. A guy stepped behind me when I was fly fishing. Not a sole in sight and he chooses to line up right behind me. On the ensueing backcast, my #2 Boss hooked the bridge of his new Nikon polarized glasses and promptly deposited them on the other side of the river. He screamed at me that they were $300 glasses and I would have to pay for them. Some People!
Last year I was fishing a local stream when I saw a gentleman decide to lay down on the rock he was fishing since he wasn't really producing anything and looked like he needed to sleep one off. About 5 minutes later I hear a loud splash. I look down stream and see nothing. Not so much as a ripple in the water. About 2 seconds after that, this guy could chugging out of the water with water coming out of his mouth and nose. Almost pee'd myself I was laughing so hard! He lost all his gear and went home soaking wet!

Had a product presentation with several of our executives last week. I was in the process of slicing up a new Dry Sausage product I helped develop, when I sliced about 1/4" of the end of my finger. Had to go in to the conference room gushing blood in a paper towel, and excuse myself from the meeting. Went to the hospital and had it cauterized and bandaged.

Lost the tip completely, and it's pretty sensitive right now. Bad part is, it is my finger that I run the line on while chuckin and duckin. It's got about 5 days to heal, before it gets exposed to rain, line, and brats. Ouch.

Was running late for work one day and was scrambling around to find a shirt.. I found one hanging on a hanger on the back of our beedroom door. Put it on, tucked it in, then sat down on the bed to put on my shoes. Bent over... PAIN... in my crotch !!! Guys feel pain all the time but very seldom is the pain in their Johnsons. Jumped up.. whipping open my pants " I'm thinking spider biting me ??" Look down and there is a sewing needel hanging from a piece of thread from the bottom button on the shirt.. The needle is in my weiner " bigtime" . I 'll leave out the rest. The part where I freak out, and then pull it out. My wife claimed when confronted that I deserved it, and my freinds pretty much agreed..

The wife and buddies have had years of slams on me over it, and its hard for me to tuck shirts in to this day.

Three years ago, me and two buddies went for some steel in Febuary. The day before it had rained and during the night the temps got below freezing. We decided to meet at first light, the trail we were walking down was about 5 feet up from the river bank. The trail was pretty icy to begin with, but we approached a spot where the ice was pratically a slide going right down to the river. I didn't feel like crawling though *****ly ash to get around it so, I proceeded to grab a tree branch to help support me as I inched accross the ice. At first the branch supported me, but two steps onto the ice and the branch snapped, I lost control and fell down to the river bank onto my right thigh, and then slid into the river. I have never seen two people laugh so hard. That is one of the worst pains I have ever felt, my whole right thigh turned black and blue not too long after that.

My story occurred on a hunting trip 7 years ago but I think it'll give everybody a good laugh.

I was pheasant hunting in some head high thick cover when I took a step and came down on a tree branch. The branch broke and I fell forward and had the remaining part of the stick go right through my brand new Carhartt hunting pants. After hitting the ground and getting my wits about me I realized I had 1" thick tree branch sticking out of my pants. As I went to remove it I felt something running down my leg. The fluid was blood.

I removed the branch and realized it had also pierced my long johns in the crotch area. At this time my brother and dad came over to see if I was all right and I told him I was bleeding pretty good and that we should probably get to the truck , which was another mile or so away. The walk to the truck wasn't bad but when I got there I dropped my pants and long johns to assess the damage, and it wasn't good!! I had a 1 to 1 1/2" inch gash in my scrotum that was still bleeding.

We drove straight to an emergency room and told the receptionist about the injury. She quickly got me into a room and had a nurse with me in about a minute. By now I was feeling pretty uncomfortable and just wanted to get this thing healed up. So when the nurse asked me why I was there I told her about my problem and showed her the gash through the hole. She quickly got the doctor and I never saw her again.

The doc was a cool customer who cleaned me up and gave me 10 stitches. But because there was still some fluid leakage he put a maxi pad in the hole of my pants and sent me on my way.

So here I come back into the emergency room with a maxi pad in full view for every one to see. My dad just chuckled and we went on home. To this day my nickname to some of my hunting buddies is "Jagged Balls"

About three years ago I leaned way back in a chair and yawned which gave me a minor hernia. Still hurts now and then if I turn the wrong way.

Last summer I was fishing the Fraser for sockeye and just about an hour before we left to come home to Seattle I hooked a nice fish. Good fight, beached it, grabbed a nearby rock and bonked the fish. The rock was jagged and cut my hand at the base of my middle finger. And I mean CUT, that span between my first and second finger was split and bleeding. My buddy kept fishing for another hour while I let the cool river water soothe the pain. After a nice three hour ride home, I went to Overlake Hospital and had stitches put in. Two days later I went on a week long golf vacation with the wife. She was upset that "my fishing" might ruin our golf trip. Every swing hurt for the first few days.(But I didn't let her know it)

Oh about 6 or 7 years ago, While deer hunting up at bald mountain. I decided to do a little goofing around on the three wheeler while back at camp waiting for breakfast. I took a corner around a tree a little to close, caught the tree and proceded to stick the foot-peg of the bike threw the bottom of my boot. Didn't realize anything was wrong with my foot till I walked back to camp ( luckily only a couple hundred yards ) and took my boot off by the fire. Needless to say after a 2 hour drive to the hospital in yakima and ten stitches around my big toe I was back at camp and ready to go back hunting. I was able to brave the pain for 3 more days with the help of animal beer and pain pills. All I could really do was ride around in my brothers truck with my foot elevated on the dash to try and stop the throbbing pain. When I got home I sold the three wheeler and have never been on one since. All I really think about now from that hunting trip was thank god for animal beer. beer

On memorial day weekend 1999 I was fishing the duc with my friend and his wife. It was sunday morning and they fished with me from whitcom dimmel to the bridge take out where they left to go to church and planned to meet me at lyendeckers that evening. So I proceeded to the bark hole to fish for some springers. I hook one side drifting through the hole and manage to net it in the tailout. When I set it in the boat it starts flopping around and one of the K-14s on one of my plug rods gets caught in the net. I decided to free the kwikfish before it gets tangled too bad and the fish flops again and sets the hook on me. Now I've got a 1/0 treble hook in the base of my ring finger all the way to the bend of the hook and the fish is still flopping around. I tried to back it out but it was past the barb. So I grabbed the k-14 with my other hand so it wouldn't get worse and waited for a lull in the fishes movement so I could let go of the plug and grab my pliers that were a long reach away. It took me about a minute after the fish settled down to convinvce myself it was ok to reach across the boat to get the pliers. When I got the pliers I had to force the hook through the other side of my finger, pinch the barb and backed the hook out. It was a helpless feeling but it makes for a good story and learning experience. Plus I got a springer out of the whole deal so it wasn't all bad.

Last year, I was driving down to the Kalama from Tacoma. I got past Longview at about 5 a.m. and all of a sudden I started getting an upset stomach, which quickly led to shooting cramps in my abdomen. There just aren't any relief stations between Longview and the Kalama River Road, but I figured if I could just hold on, I might make it to the outhouse at the beginner's hole.

The cramps would come and go at about 3 minute intervals and they got sharper and sharper. By the time I got to exit 32 I was literally standing on the floorboard with my left foot while driving, trying to maintain control of both the car and my bodily functions.

It was still pitch black when I wheeled into the parking lot at beginner's hole. I slammed on the brakes and slid to a stop in the parking lot by the outhouse. I cut off the engine and hot-footed it toward the relief station. I totally forgot that they have these big boulders set in the ground around the john. I ran right in to one of them. I was wearing sandalls and I slammed my right knee and big toe into one of them and just went sprawling in the mud.

I rolled toward the outhouse, in the mud, got back up on one foot and hopped into the john on one foot. How I maintained control, I still don't know. I sat there in total darkness in agony between the fire in my knee and toe and fire down below.

After I was finished with my business, I continued up to the deadline, still in the dark, put on my waders and went fishing. My foot was just numb. As the day went on and I got a little feeling back, my foot felt wet, but I just figured it was my sock all wet from the mud. When I took off my waders at the end of the day, I saw that my sock was half soaked through with blood and when I took off my sock, my toenail was half ripped off.

I don't remember whether I caught a fish or not.
