Got our res. at the campground and spot on the dock, got the GPS chip for the west side of Vancouver Island. So tell me about the area and about the fishing for 'butts and kings.

Kings - Up the coast towards Tofino, 55'-60' of water, down riggers on the bottom w/ flasher n hoochie combo or flasher n herring. In rough weather you can fish behind Cree and Crow Islands along the kelp.

Halibut - South Bank, Shipwreck or Swiftsure.

For info you may want to try this site: www.fishbc.com .I am sure somebody there will tell you lots on where to fish for that time of year. I think most of it will be out at southbank, downriggin' on the bottom for chinooks. I is predicted to be a banner year this year.

Swiftshore, and southbank for both Halibut and Kings(springs) You can catch both downriggin' near the bottom.
Most of the action will be out on the banks, but you can get some action around the islands.(Cree or Kirby point) It gets better around the islands as the kelp grows and the bait moves in.
Some times it is pretty good, right around the red bouy coming out of the bay(this time of year). Keep an eye out for birds, and the Island West guide boats wink

If I was going there at that time I would head SW out of the harbor and go to either the 8, 15 or 22 mile humps. These are all part of Southbank. Swiftsure is a damn long ways from Ucluelet. I have fished there many times and may even be there at about the same time this year. It's great fishing out on the banks at that time. It's very doubtful many kings will be in close to shore then. I always fish pretty much right on the bottom in 120 to 240" of water. I seem to have the best luck when my drigger ball is bouncing bottom from time to time. Have done well on flashers w/coyotes, squid and anchovies. Can also do very well on plugs if there's bait balling on the bottom. You can catch kings and halibut using the same methods. Good luck. Maybe I'll see you up there. What kind of boat are you in?

It's an older[better] 19' Glasply-- there's only been twice in the last 4 years that we had to turn back going out to Swiftsure from Neah Bay because of big water.

Jerry, did you catch the Ucluelet article in STS?

We used to go up in August and fish primarily Wya Point (20-30 minute run north from the lighthouse). Seemed like most folks (and Island West guides) fished there at that time. Not sure if that spot is hot in June. We'd also fished the small bay just north of the lighthouse, especially if the elements made it too tough to get to Wya Point.

We fished close to shore and never went after halibut.

I have seen guys in private boats up there bring a carton of cigarettes or some handfulls of gear like hoochies or coyotes to bribe the guides at the fishcleaning station for info. It worked really good, a couple packs of smokes got this one guy a list of waypoints and a tour through the guide's bin in his boat where he stowed his gear he was using. It's alot cheaper than going out with one for a day to learn the fishery.

I checked out the charts, but nothing was listed as Southbank.I see S.W. of Ucluelet is an offshoot of La Perouse Bank, kind of points back toward Bamfield--- is this Southbank?

I can tell you this, June is an offshore month, your gonna fish 5 - 8 miles out at la Parouse Bank (?) those fish are coming south or they are just hanging out there to feed, I would'nt push inshore much looking for kings they don't come in usually till late july or august, you'll find halibut in the same place or a little farther south, that area is hot and cold but the kings are usually there just plan on running for them, there are usually a fleet of boats that know where there at and they leave early, I think you'll get more valuable info' on the hap's when you get there, good luck!

Jerry, the bank you mention above is Southbank. That's a name given it by all the locals. There are numerous humps as you head SW that start at around 6 to 8 miles. Then you just keep moving out until you find the fish, boats or both at the same time. I have never had to go all the way out to the 22 mile bank to get fish. I hear you about the older better Glasply. They were and still are great boats. I had an 18' years ago. I now have a 27 Seasport that I've had for 11 years and I love it too.

Jerry;
Find the Princess Fleet and you will find the fish. Those guys know there stuff. Find there radio Frequency. They are always chatterin'. I have done pretty well up there with Jigs they use. They are four ounce mostly white with a little blue or green.

Did you know Ucluelet is an Indian word for Barfing in the Ocean? Take your Dramamine!
