Spent a week in Panama fishing with some friends, now some of you may figure out where my nickname "Rooster" came from.

The biggest Rooster of the trip wasnt to healthy after release, so I went full submersible and brought him up and revived him!
We spent most of our time fishng the inshore species, as water temps were not so favorable offshore. We still managed several yellowfins to 200# and one big black marlin that was over 500#.

All those fish come from the Pacific side....
Funny, there aint supposed to be any snook on the Pacific. laugh Well nobody told them that.
There are a few Tarpoon around, but mainly they are caught closer to the canal. We was about 250 clicks north of there.

Hey Drifter, how big you figure that Gallo to be? (the one with the scales, not the pale white bald one!!)

Is that big red mother a amberjack or a pargo(true red snapper)...?? Nice rooster and snook too! My bud's and I did a trip back in Jan. 2000 down mexico way, to a little town called Barra de naviad on the Pacific side. We caught snook right of the beach casting 1 oz. spoons into the surf, also took some striped marlin to 150lbs. Theres a lagoon there thats used as a boat harbor have seen some HUGE snook pic's that came out of that backwater ...... thumbs

Nice fish Rooster!

Hey any of you out there ever fished Cabo? I'm going there for a week in early December and want to sped at least one day out on the Big Blue chasing whatever will bite a lure or bait. Don't matter if it's a sail fish, marlin, durado, tuna, carp, sucker, white shark, etc. Just as long as the boat is fast, the waves are calm, the beer is cold, and the fish are hungry!

Seriously though, anyone fished Cabo? If so, got any recommendations on guides for me?

Went on a Cruise last November. One of the Ports was Cabo, had a charter all set up. Waves were too big for tenders to get us from ship to the docks. Never set a foot on Cabo soil. frown

So off to the Ledo Deck Bar I went laugh

Buenas Parquito - yo tengo un amigo mas fina con muchas experencia con el mar, y botes en Cabo. Puedo llamar con el en una semana, entonces yo tengo un bote mas fina para ti.....

En engles - Yo Parker. I got a buddy that fishes the sh*#t out of those waters. I will see if he is going to be around down there then. If not he probably knows of a skipper or two that will let you set the hook on a biter. You have to watch those mexican skippers, they kill about everything, and sell it - so they dont want some cracker missing the bites.

The big red fish is a Cubera Snaper. Otherwise known as "dog tooth" snapper. That is not the "true" red snapper that is caught in the gulf. In fact, it aint even in the same ballpark. Red snappers are smaller type of bottom feeders. A big one will be 20-30 lbs. Those cuberas get bigger than 50-60 but I bet only a handful of people have ever seen them.
You have a better chance of getting hit by a russian sattelite than landing one of those suckers.
You need MINIMUM 50# gear (we use 50 tufline and 100 leaders) to stop them, or its in the rocks for you. Gone are your line, leader, live bait, hook, or 20 dollar popper if thats what you use. You can stop them if they are as big as the one in the photo. If they are much bigger...... its fun trying! You get good at tying bimini twists down there in a hurry.

If you aint never seen a 50# Cubera smash a topwater plug, put it on your list. It slightly resembles a volkswagon beetle being dropped from around 1000 feet.

I have seen a couple of them Cubera in the 50-60 pound class. Hooked about five in my life. Each one lasted about 3 seconds. 65lb spectra and 100lb leader with 30 lbs of drag just doesn't hack it. Next year we are going to have to gear up so we stand a chance aginst them fish.

Dandy Gallo. Fish of a lifetime for sure, my guess is it has 60 all covered up no problem. Doesn't get any better landing it on a surface popper too. That chugger hanging out of teh Cuberas mouth is a dandy lure. They quit making them in the states about 6 years ago. Found some in Singapore, ordered me up every last one the guy had sitting on the shelf.

Ok, I admit it I'm jealous. Looks like you guys did well. I see that you managed to even get the Weasel's ugly mug in the pic on that Rooster fish. eek I hope he didn't feed the fish like he did in Cabo!

Well congradulations on the trip and good luck in Montanna.

Great Fish Rooster. Yeah that Pez Gallo looks to be every bit of 60#s. I got a 50#er this year and it looks skinny compared to the the one you landed. Nice!

The Dog Tooth Snappers-they are common in the Sea Of Cortez-especially off the 80 foot shelf out front of Rancho Leonero. Not too much cover there, so you can get them in sometimes.
Good pics man...
