Dark colors are the rule for summer fish in low clear water. Black, purple, red and combo's of those colors work well. I usually don't go much smaller than 1/16th oz. in most situations though 1/32nd will work well in slow pools where the fish will stack in the summer.

Last summer I had outstanding results using solid red chenile jigs (1/16 oz.). I also did quite well using black maribou's (1/8 oz.) with a shrimp tail attached to the hook. Also, go with the lightest flourocarbon possible. Makes a big difference.
Good luck

Jigs never work for me in the summer, I rig them up like I usually do for winter fish, but it just does not produce for me. I heard of a non weighted jig that you can rig up to bounce off the the bottom just like a corkie. can anyone confirm this?? what

Josh,
I believe that the same guy that makes "Fish Doctor" jigs also markets those drift fishing jigs as well. I tried them on the OP last fall and hooked a beautiful Coho. I think that they're a bit too big for summer fishing though. Maybe if you added some shrimp or a nightcrawler they'd be a little more tempting for a summer fish. I've only seen them at a couple of stores around Olympia. Not sure about your neck of the woods though.

Never tried them, but believe that Jann's Netcraft carries them.

I do a lot of bobber and jig fishing for the summer run steelhead. The best jig that I have used that I like is a White head, red body and a black tail. That was the hot one for me last year. Also a real winner was a red head purple body jig.
Use small jigs, lite line, like 6 or 8 pound test. And once that bobber goes down you hammer them.

Early in the year when the water's higher and there's less visibility I still like going to a pink/white combo. But once the water clears up, black, red, purple, pink, and white all have worked for me.

lewis river fisher-
I make drifting "float head jigs" with marabou tails, chenile body and a cheater for a head where the jig head would be. i cant post any pics cuz my camara isnt working but i can get some too you. they work good but they are not for "searching" unknown water. they are best used where you know the hole well so you dont lose as many. (dont fish the soul duc with em). they are a little more labour intensive than just tying up a corkie and yarn. I think that these are the secret weapon.

dont give up on jigs in the summer, even with dark bodie jigs- try and keep a little pink in the pattern. like a pink butt skunk

ps. its more important to go with a cork float and a 8 lb leader in low and clear than a small jig.

For drift fishing, rig up like you would with a corky/yarn combo, leave the corky on your leader and put a fly on the end of your line.
