Wild Steelhead Coalition Meeting
Wednesday, June 4, 2003 7:00 PM (6:30 Social) Bothell American Legion Post
19213 Bothell Way NE, Bothell, WA

You are invited to attend the Wild Steelhead Coalition's June meeting. Be sure to join us for a great evening full of important information/discussion regarding wild steelhead and raffle of some great fishing items courtesy of Avid Angler, Kaufmann's and Three Rivers Tackle.

June Program/Guest Speaker: Nick Gayeski

Presentation Title: "Steelhead Life History and Population
Persistence: Thoughts From Kamchatka".

Nick will provide an overview of Kamchatka's landscape, river Environments and salmonid populations; Russia's listing of steelhead in the Red Data Book, the Wild Salmon Center's Kamchatka Steelhead Project and Jack Stanford's and his involvement with the Wild Salmon Center as part of an expanding international scientific research and conservation project focusing on river complexity and salmonid biodiversity. Nick will also describe the general steelhead/rainbow population complex found in western Kamchatkan rivers and discuss some of the data collected. He will then discuss some possible relations between life history diversity of rainbow/steelhead in Kamchatka and the long-term persistence of these populations.

Bio:, Nick Gayeski has worked full time for Washington Trout since 1996 analyzing state and federal natural resource management policies affecting resident and anadromous salmonids and their aquatic habitats, including salmon and steelhead harvest policies, hatchery policies and practices, and land use issues affecting water quality, quantity, and the general biological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Prior to that Nick ran the Western Flyfisher, in Lynnwood, WA. from 1986 until 1993, then worked for Kaufmann's Streamborn Fly Shop in Seattle and Bellevue from 1993 to 1996. during this time he also guided for steelhead on the Skykomish, Sauk-Skagit, and Wenatchee, and the Yakima for trout. Nick began going to Kamchatka in 1999. In addition to his regular fulltime work with Washington Trout, he is in process of earning his Ph.D. in Biology under Dr. Jack Stanford at the University of Montana, where he plans to focus on the Kacmahtka steelhead/rainbow research.

A question and answer period will follow as well as an overview of other WSC business and raffle of some great fishing items. Feel free to show up at 6:30 PM to meet some of the WSC Members and hear about how the WSC is working to preserve the legacy of wild steelhead!

Jerry and CWUgirl are you guys trolling for controversy?? This is just a thread about a meeting. SO WHAT!!
CWUgirl dont worry the WT hatered is still alive and well. Its just most of the WT supporters are off thinking up there next lawsuit and licking there wounds from the last one. If you havent noticed that they only post when they have a lawsuit pending the rest of the time they crawl back under the rock they came out from.

Just curious, I heard that when McMillan from WT was a guest speaker for the WSC he was paid. Does next month's speaker from WT have to be paid? I realize how hard it is to keep coming up with interesting guest speakers monthly and this question is not meant to be critical to WT or WSC. I'm just curious on how willingly different conservation groups share their expertise.

Only guest we ever paid was McMillian and it was not as a WT speaker but as a private citizen. In the last two years we have had speakers from LLTK's, WT, Curt Kramer [2], a couple of other state bio's, a WDFW commissioner. Just because you have a person from any group come give a talk doesn't mean you support them. The WSC as a group seems to have a thirst for knowledge and you don't broaden your knowledge base byrereading only one chapter of a book.

Grandpa, I don't censor much as you should know. I just what to generate a little interest in the raffle.

McMillan isn't a WT employee, at least he isn't on their staff list. He is just a board member which is a volunteer position is my understanding.

All right Jerry thanks for some clarification. I thought that McMillian was WT staff, and it was entirely an assumption of mine, duh! beathead Who ever is responsible for getting guest speakers for WSC is doing a great job and it is a tough task.
