Well, I hope you all had a better day than I did on the Skykomish today. Fished it hard for steelies and kings with my buddy in his 20' Alumaweld for 5 hours.......zero. Except two small cutts. Talked with a fish checker at the ramp at Sultan and he said there were 60 boat trailers in the parking area and I asked if he counted the 12 down the street where we parked and he said "no". He asked if we had any luck and you can imagine what I said. I asked him about his report tally and he said, "one steelhead, one king, and pages of zeros." We did see three steelies caught during the day. So 72 boats(it looked like 72,000) and not many fish boated. BRUTAL. Now where did I put my golf clubs?

I decided to pass up on the zoo and fish a local zipper. I was the only one on the entire stretch of river, got four nice resident bows, two in the 12-14" range and two at 17". All wild and full of fight. Oh, all four were CNR'd, gotta throw that in there Gotta love opening day RL

What a boat parade. Got one springer and saw only two other fish hooked. I think there was more traffic on the Sky than I-5.

Fished the Sky today, got a late start and didnt get on the water till 6:00. Hit the hole above the train trestle and dodged traffic for about 20 minutes while we fought a nice 15# hatchery buck. Only fished another 15 minutes before we ran up river and my buddy ran out of gas. To make a bad story short we did get back to the ramp and skipper was done with fishing. Short day, talked to several other and it was a mixed bag, some did well and most had a nice boat ride.

Took a nice boat ride down the Nooch. Lots of changes, most of which I like. There are a number of sweepers and slides that need some trimming. Forgot the chainsaw, but I am sure someone will remember one.

I fished Dolphin Pt. first and saw no fished caught. Moved over to Southworth and I hooked a nice fish on my first drift with a Pt. Wilson Dart.(low teens) Lost it right at the boat! Saw 1 other fish landed. Pretty slow, but it beats yard work.

Man, the Sky was just plain nuts. I was at Cracker Bar in Sultan and I swear I have never seen so many sleds in my life. You'd think there was a million dollar derby going on!
Either way, I only saw one fish caught. I tried drifting, floats with the pink worms, and spoons, all up and down the bank. Not so much as a nibble.
I stopped by the Lewis Street bridge as well; same situation. It was a little more exciting with the near-continueous roar of shotgun fire from the south bank, though.

How many boats can one river take?
The post above said 70+ trailers at Sultan. I counted 27 at the High Bridge launch. From the noises coming from Lewis St. at first light, there were a ton there too. Oh and lets not forget Tualco as there were a couple sleds that came upriver from that direction before 5:00.

I got a late invite to fish with some of the nicest guys on the river. Launched at 3:30 and started fishing at first light. We hit 2 kings and 1 steelhead on the first 3 passes. Ended up 2 kings and 6 steelhead for the day fishing 5 rods. Pretty quiet from mid morning on. I didn't see as many bankies as were out last year.

I fished from daybreak till dusk on the opener in area 11. I did get to talk to Easy Limits albeit briefly by VHF. It sounded like a terrible opener, but I did mangage to see and hear of a few fish caught. A buddy of mine and his partners caught four kings to 15 pounds and another guy had two in his boat that went in the high teens. I myself had one hit and to make things worse, my brother comes out at around 5 pm and nails one that went 19 pounds at the clay banks on a dart! So in other words, there are some fish to be caught! Did I mention that there were a few boats fishing the Point area? WOW.

I decided to skip the Sky and Cow. So instead I went to a good sized creek and CNR many small rainbows and cutts. The largest was an amazing 17" for that creek. Used my fly rod and light tackle. I even saw one summer run but left it alone.

Tip, Couldn't leave well enough alone could you? It's like a bad car wreck, you tell yourself your not going to look and then you look, get disgusted, and ask yourself why? Should've hit the other river with Howzer and I for piece of mind instead of firstdayitis on Cowlitz North. :p
